Edmonton Oilers vs. New Jersey Devils: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The New Jersey Devils, currently third in the Metropolitan Division, host the Edmonton Oilers, second in the Pacific, at Prudential Center at 7:30 PM ET.

The hosts are coming in on a modest two-game winning streak, including a 5-3 win at home over the Columbus Blue Jackets Tuesday night.

In that contest, Jesper Bratt had a goal and two assists, Luke Hughes had a goal and an assist, and Cody Glass had two assists, while Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves.

Bratt leads the team and is tenth in the league with 73 points. His 55 assists are sixth in the NHL. Jack Hughes (27 goals, 43 assists) is second on the team with 70 points, but he is now out for the season.

Edmonton has struggled of late, losing 7-of-10. They have lost five of their last six road contests, including a 3-2 setback at the Buffalo Sabres Monday evening.

Defensemen Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse scored the goals and Leon Draisatl had two assists, while Stuart Skinner made 20 saves.

Draisatl leads the league with 46 goals and is second in the NHL with 97 points, trailing only Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche.

He is currently on a 15-game point streak and has 11 goals and 12 assists in those contests.

This is the second and final time the Oilers and Devils will meet during the regular season. New Jersey shut out Edmonton in November, 3-0, on the road.

Bratt had a goal and an assist in the win, with Timo Meier and Stefan Noesen also scoring. Jake Allen made 31 saves for the Devils and Calvin Pickard stopped 13-of-16 shots for the Oilers.

Edmonton Oilers vs. New Jersey Devils betting picks and predictions

New Jersey Devils +1.5 (-210)

The Devils have lost 3-of-4 at home despite the win over the Blue Jackets earlier this week, while Edmonton has dropped 5-of-6 on the road. Something has to give here.

In a battle of slumping squads, defense may be the X-factor. In its last 10 games, Edmonton has surrendered 40 goals, while New Jersey has allowed just 25.

That is a stark difference to the two offenses, which have been fairly even. The Oilers have scored 29 goals during that 10-game stretch, while the Devils have tallied 27.

In fact, New Jersey is one of the stingiest teams in the league. It’s allowing 2.5 goals a game this season, fourth best in the NHL. Markstrom is 22-12-5 on the season and his 2.36 goals allowed average is sixth in the league.

Nico Hischier has had the hot hand for New Jersey, scoring three goals and assisting on four others in the last 10 games. He is third on the team with 50 points, followed by Meier (18 goals, 24 assists), and Noesen (34 points).

The Oilers have solid scoring numbers throughout the season. Connor McDavid is fourth in the league in both assists (58) and points (82). Edmonton’s 207 goals are 10th in the league.

However, they couldn’t solve the Devils in November and they are struggling to solve opposing defenses right now.

Although they are only 14-17 against the spread at home, and 3-7 ATS as underdogs, look for the Devils to cover the 1.5-goa spread tonight at home against the Oilers.

Under 6 goals (-105)

New Jersey has played to the under 13 times in its last 18 home contests and 40 times overall this season.

The two teams combined allow just 5.5 goals per game. Edmonton, despite all its scoring prowess this season, is struggling offensively right now.

Look for the teams to post a similar result as November and score less than six combined goals.

Leon Draisatl Anytime Goalscorer (+110)

Draisatl is the one Edmonton player who is not struggling offensively right now. As part of that 15-game point streak, he has eight goals and eight assists over the last 10 games.

He has scored at least one goal in nine of the Oilers’ last 12 games, but he has been held without one the past two contests.

His scoring droughts this season rarely last longer than that, so look for Draisatl to light the lamp.
