The Western Conference Finals are set in the NHL Playoffs, and we are set to be treated to an elite matchup between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
This clash is an exact replica of the 2024 Western Conference Finals, where the lower-seeded Oilers captured the series in six games. They will look to repeat that result to enter their second-straight Stanley Cup Final, while the Stars will be aiming for redemption and return to the dance for the first time since 2020.
Both rosters have shown they are poised and ready to lift the Stanley Cup. They have each gone through their own adversities, but have continued to roll their way through to this point.
There are elite stars on each side entering this series with plenty of confidence. Plus, they should all be ready for this, as each roster is full of veterans.
This series could go many different ways, but I think it is safe to say it will be must-watch action.
To get you set for this series, we are here to provide some in-depth and expert predictions for the 2025 NHL Western Conference Finals between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars.
For many years now, the Dallas Stars have been a constant threat to go far in the playoffs. Their core has a strong mix of young and old, but they are filled with talent.
Not to mention, they have one of the best coaches in the league in Pete DeBoer. The roster construction is one of the best in the NHL.
They have battled two Stanley Cup-contending teams in the Colorado Avalanche and President’s Trophy-winning Winnipeg Jets, and beat them both in seven games.
They have proven their ability to get the job done in a win-or-go-home scenario, and they win in many different ways.
Edmonton will pose a major challenge to Dallas, as this team is hungry to finally get over the hump and get Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl a Stanley Cup.
However, I think Dallas matches up great against the Oilers and should be able to complete the task at hand.
Edmonton’s offense has heavily outperformed Dallas’ so far, but the major factor in this series could be Dallas’ defensive ability. They are known for a solid, gritty and defensive style that gives up just 2.54 goals per game (fourth out of 16 playoff teams), and they will need to continue this in this round.
Dallas is deeper, more physical, and can highly perform on both ends of the ice.
It should be a close series, but it could pay to back Dallas.
This series includes the easy front-runner for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, Mikko Rantanen.
Dallas acquired this player at the trade deadline to boost their already-elite roster, but they could not have expected this outcome.
Rantanen currently leads the NHL Playoffs in points (19) and goals (9), which is far more than anyone else in Dallas. He is clearly the engine for this team.
This will be a very tough opponent for Dallas, but their whole playoff run has included Stanley Cup contenders.
He has performed against the likes of some of the NHL’s best players in Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, before continuing his efforts against the Jets and their goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who is likely to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender.
With the postseason Rantanen is having, it is extremely difficult to expect the Oilers to shut him down. He clearly is hungry for his second Stanley Cup and is clawing his way there by showing elite finishing and playmaking skills.
We are in for what could be one of the best series in this year’s playoffs.
Each team has made for appointment viewing throughout the entire playoffs, and in this final clash of the Western Conference, I expect nothing different.
As the playoffs go on, games become tighter, and the weaker and unstable teams drop off. In the case of Dallas and Edmonton, both teams are legit and have major aspirations to win this season. They know the task at hand, and should both realize there are no shortcuts upcoming.
I trust that neither team will bow down in the face of any adversity. McDavid and the Oilers went down 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals last season, and brought it to Game 7.
This is the type of work ethic I expect both teams to have, which should result in a long series.
