Part of a three-game NHL Sunday brings us a battle between the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars. This intra-conference clash will take place at American Airlines Center, and should bring us great hockey.
These teams are meeting for the first of two matchups this regular season, and they are both in need of the points. Detroit is in an uphill battle to earn a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, while Dallas is looking to climb from third in a very-tough Central Division. Here are our Red Wings vs. Stars predictions.
There is a significant difference in talent and results in these teams. The Stars have been one of the best Western Conference teams for a number of years, highlighted by their top seeding for the playoffs in the West last season. The standings however do not yet reflect this as they are currently third in what is a tough Central Division, meaning these are important points up for grabs.
The Stars are on home ice which is always a boost - with only four teams having registered more than their 16 home wins so far, and they are welcoming ab erratic Detroit team. While the Red Wings have some star players, a lack of depth along with defensive blunders consistently hurt them.
Dallas will come out of the gates flying in this one, and not stop. The Stars are a much better team, and are desperate for a win after losing three of their last four games. There should be no need for overtime in this one, with the home team expected to win comfortably.
A major strength of Dallas is their depth. As it currently stands seven players have 10+ goals, which illustrates a balanced attack. They are currently ninth in NHL goals per game average (3.2) and are facing the eighth worst goals against average in Detroit (3.02).
The Red Wings should notch a couple of their own goals, as they are decent at scoring goals with a 2.9 goals per game average. However, Dallas’ offense could really have a chance to fill the net in what should be a dominant win. We should see lots of goals in this one.
Jason Robertson is a prolific goalscorer for this Dallas Stars team, and has been for years. The young superstar is third on the team in both goals (14) and shots (118), and is heavily relied on every night.
Robertson is performing great lately and finding the back of the net, as he has 5 goals in his last 7 games. Detroit may have lots of issues stopping Dallas’ attack, and as Robertson is a go-to forward, I expect him to help lead the charge.
