Saturday in the NHL brings us a big time Western Conference matchup between the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers. One of the later games of a 10-game slate, the Stars and Oilers will use this game as a great test as the playoffs are approaching.

The trade deadline has passed and the Dallas Stars picked up the big fish in Mikko Rantanen, while the Oilers upgraded their defensive core by adding Jake Walman. Management is showing confidence in these teams, and their potential is real. This should be a hard-fought battle.

Dallas Stars ML (-110)

As if Dallas didnt look strong enough, their team now has dynamic winger Mikko Rantanen on their side. This was the biggest move of the trade deadline, and should absolutely fill this team with confidence and excitement. I could see this team coming out flying in enemy territory, looking to set the tone early and improve on an impressive record of 41-19-2.

Edmonton has been struggling as of late, with a 4-7-1 record in their last 12 games. Two of those wins came in overtime against far weaker teams in the Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens. They do have home ice advantage, but making things right against a powerhouse like Dallas is a tough task.

Dallas dominated Edmonton when they met in October, beating them 4-1. This Dallas team just has less holes, and plays a far more consistent game. They have a great mix of size and skill, but the main factor in this game could be their strong defense against Edmonton’s volatile defense. I expect a sound Dallas Stars team to take this win.

Over 6.5 (-120)

These teams are both elite offensively. Dallas currently has the fourth-best goals per game average (3.4 per game), while Edmonton holds the 12th best (3.2 per game). The NHL’s leading goal scorer in Leon Draisaitl (46 goals) will be on the ice, as well as other offensive dynamos in Connor McDavid, Jason Robertson, and Mikko Rantanen. 

In Edmonton’s recent struggles, their defensive efforts have really been leaking. They have given up 4+ goals in six of the past eight games, and now have to attempt to shut down an elite offense in Dallas. This is something I do not see happening, so expect strong offense from Dallas.

Edmonton should be able to pot a few for themselves, as they can never be taken lightly and are never truly out of a game. In a game they may be trailing in often, I expect an added focus on offense. Combined, these teams should give us a high-scoring affair.

Leon Draisaitl over 2.5 shots (-170)

Draisaitl has been one of, if not the best player in the entire NHL this season. He leads the league in goals (46) and is second in points (94). This comes as no surprise to anyone, as he has done this his whole career.

Welcoming a team like Dallas poses a major threat to him and his Oilers. It will take a lot if they want to earn this all-important win, and as usual he will need to be a driving force in those efforts. With this being the case, I expect him to extend every effort to lead an offensive charge, peppering the Dallas net to help generate offense and lead his team to victory.

He has shot over 2.5 times in four of his last five games, and I expect him to hit the same mark in this matchup.
