The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded the the most valuable player in the NHL playoffs, and is typically awarded to a player on the Stanley Cup winning team.
2024 winner Connor McDavid bucked that trend, winning the award despite his Edmonton Oilers losing to the Florida Panthers in seven games in the Cup final. McDavid became the first player to win the Conn Smythe while playing for the losing team since Mighty Ducks of Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2003.
In the 2025 Cup Final rematch between the Oilers and Panthers, which the Panthers won 4-2, the award went back to a player on the winning team.
The Conn Smythe Trophy went to Panthers center Sam Bennett, who scored 15 goals with seven assists in 23 postseason games, including five goals in the Stanley Cup Final. He also made life miserable for opponents with his play in front of the net, which helped his goal tally.
