Part of a seven-game Sunday in the NHL brings us an enticing matchup between Nathan MacKinnon's Colorado Avalanche and Jack Hughes' New Jersey Devils.
It is the first of two matchups this season and both teams will be hungry to pass this big test, as they are both considered contenders within their respective conferences.
There are a few solid advantages the Devils have in this one.
They are in their home building for this one, where they have earned at least a point in 11 of 18 games. Plus, Colorado is playing in their fourth straight road game and second in as many nights.
Colorado has been inconsistent all season, proven by a 15-13-0 record.
Even with some of the best players in the entire league, having a well-rounded lineup is key. This is exactly the type of team that the Devils ice each night, as they look to extend a two-game winning streak.
New Jersey is more-rested, much healthier, and have proven to be a far-superior overall team than the Avalanche. I see them getting this win as the favorites on home ice.
MacKinnon is easily one of the best players in the entire NHL and the driver of this Avalanche team.
He leads the team in points, but more importantly he leads the entire team in shots by a 28-shot margin, while he leads all forwards in time on the ice by almost a full minute.
In a game where the Avalanche could be down for a majority of the game, look for Colorado to lean on their star to help either drive a comeback, or solidify any lead.
He has a lethal shot, which was proven by 51 goals last season. Expect him to use this weapon many times in this game.
Devils captain Nico Hischier is leading his team in many ways this season, including on-ice production. He is near a point per game and leads the team in goals with 15. He is a threat every night.
Colorado has been shaky defensively this season and New Jersey has been strong offensively.
Win or lose, I see the Devils finding the score sheet multiple times, where we should find Hischier join in the fun.
