Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Rangers Game 1: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The NHL Eastern Conference’s top two teams – the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers – meet up in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Rangers made quick work of the Washington Capitals in a four-game sweep to advance, while the Hurricanes took care of the New York Islanders in five games.

Game 1 takes place at Madison Square Garden, with puck drop at 4PM ET.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Rangers betting picks and predictions

Under 5.5 Total Goals (-120)

The Rangers and Hurricanes have some major star power on offense, but both teams finished middle-of-the-pack in scoring this year. The foundation for both squads is defense and goaltending, as both finished top five in the NHL in fewest goals allowed per game.

In three head-to-head matchups this season, the Rangers won 2-1, the Hurricanes triumphed 6-1 and then the Rangers edged out a 1-0 success. The six-goal performance from Carolina was a bit of an anomaly, as the two teams combined for five total goals outside of that figure.

Due to the Rangers’ dominance in round one, they haven’t played since April 28. They will need to shake off some rust, and that’s not great going up against Hurricanes’ goalie Frederik Andersen, who is 13-2 since returning from injury.

Together, Andersen and Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin are two of the best in the NHL, and with the playoffs seeing a decrease in scoring, promoting more consistent, intense defense, siding with under 5.5 total goals is a smart move.

Carolina Hurricanes Money Line (-115)

The Rangers may have won the President’s Trophy, but the Hurricanes are the hottest team in hockey right now, winning 18 of 23 entering this contest.

New York defeated Carolina twice in low-scoring games this year, but the Hurricanes proved their best hockey is better than the Rangers when playing head-to-head, with their six-goal output on January 2nd.

With the Rangers likely knocking off rust early in Game 1, the Hurricanes should strike first and hold the lead with a depth and consistency advantage. Plus, Andersen feels confident in front of the net, having missed the last playoff series against the Rangers a couple of years back.

The Hurricanes and Rangers are two of the sport’s most complete teams, and both got better at the trade deadline, but the notable addition of Jake Guentzel for Carolina could create a key swing for them.

Vincent Trochek Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (+100)

Vincent Trocheck has been a key offensive contributor for New York throughout the season.

While he took only nine shots in four games against the Caps, he did net two goals. More importantly, he averaged more time on ice than any other player for the Rangers.

In playoff matchups, auxiliary players like Trocheck often elevate their game, knowing that every shot could make a difference in the outcome of the game, especially when special attention is paid to the likes of Artemi Panarin.

Time on ice is crucial to consider for shots-on-goal bets, and considering his role as a top-six forward, his consistent shot volume throughout the season and two goals scored in round one, betting on Trocheck to surpass 2.5 shots on goal seems like a reasonable expectation for this game.
