The Cincinnati Bengals are 0-2 to start the season, but Joe Burrow and his team will expect to gain a first victory when they welcome the Washington Commanders to Ohio in one of two Monday Night Football clashes.
The Bengals were below par in their Week 1 loss against the Patriots, but they were much improved at the Chiefs last Sunday, losing 26-25 as a couple of important calls went against them.
Washington, meanwhile, is 1-1 to start the season but last week's narrow win over the Giants is hard to weigh up given Big Blue's struggles and a trip to Cincinnati is a much tougher proposition.
Two former LSU products face off at the Paycor Stadium as Burrow's Bengals take on Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in a game which the odds suggest will go the way of the home team.
In hindsight, it's no great surprise to see Cincinnati make a slow start to the 2024 NFL season.
Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury last year and he threw for just 164 yards in the Week 1 loss to New England, but he produced an improved performance last week, almost leading his team to a victory over the Chiefs at Arrowhead.
Joe Cool threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns last week. However, he also made a crucial fumble which went for a TD, so it's fair to say that there is still room for improvement.
At his best, however, Burrow is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and he's now getting all of his weapons back on the field, with wide receiver Tee Higgins cleared to line up against the Commanders on Monday night.
The Commanders won their only previous meeting against a Burrow-led offense, but that came in the early stages of his Bengals career in 2020, so there's not much to go on in terms of recent match-up data.
Washington QB Daniels has shown immediate promise and will be a leading candidate to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year if he continues on his upward trajectory.
However, while the Commanders won a home game against the Giants last week, their 37-20 Week 1 loss to a pass-heavy Buccaneers offense is a better indication of how this game could play out.
While the Bengals are favored by 7.5 points on the spread, it could pay to take slightly shorter odds on them to win by 7.0 in the alternative market.
Zack Moss, Ja'Marr Chase and the returning Higgins are all plus-money to score a touchdown on Monday night, but the Bengal who really catches the eye is Mike Gesicki, who has been cleared to play after a calf injury.
Tight end Gesicki has emerged as one of Burrow's top receivers over the first two weeks of the season. He was targeted four times for three catches in Week 1 then stepped up last week with seven grabs off of nine targets.
Higgins' return gives Burrow more options in the passing game, but it should also afford Gesicki more room in the end zone.
Daniels will no doubt utilise his own legs to help get the Commanders moving on offense, but he should also continue to feed Brian Robinson Jr.
After a solid Week 1 showing featuring 40 yards on the ground, Washington's running back exploded against the Giants, rushing for 133 yards on 17 attempts.
He's up against a Bengals defense which gave up rushing 120 yards to Rhamondre Stevenson in Week 1 and 90 to Isiah Pacheco last week.
