The first Sunday of the 2024 NFL regular season features an intriguing showdown between the Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears.
Even in the middle of a busy Week 1 schedule, there will be a ton of eyeballs on this game mainly because the Bears were one of the most talked-about teams throughout the offseason.
They selected quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and entirely revamped the team on the offensive side of the ball.
Chicago has high hopes to bounce back from a 7-10 record in 2023, while Tennessee is coming off a 6-11 season.
Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to be made on Titans vs. Bears.
There is no doubt that the Bears are suddenly loaded with talent on offense. The question is, how long it will take for those pieces to come together and be productive on a consistent basis?
Williams has instantly become QB1 in Chicago after Justin Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former USC star has every reason to succeed – at least in the long run – since the front office also brought in running back D’Andre Swift, veteran receiver Keenan Allen and tight end Gerald Everett to go along with another first-round selection in the form of receiver Rome Odunze.
It’s a promising group, but keep in mind that these are guys who have never played together in a meaningful football game.
Tennessee’s offense will also look different following the departure of Derrick Henry, but Tony Pollard is a capable replacement and receiver Calvin Ridley signed as a free agent.
Second-year signal-caller Will Levis has plenty of weapons around him and should make progress as he tries to build on a decent rookie season in which he tossed eight touchdown passes and four interceptions in nine games.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Titans traded for cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and signed fellow cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. Those acquisitions alone should bolster the defense in a big way.
With an unproven offense and a shaky defense, the Bears are far from a slam dunk to be the most improved team in the league. They may win outright on Sunday, but giving them more than a field goal is too much.
The Under correlates nicely with the Titans covering the spread, because they probably won’t be able to keep up if this game turns into a shootout. Fortunately for the visitors, this has all the makings of a relatively low-scoring affair.
As talented as Williams is, he does not figure to set the world on fire right out of the gates. A lot of that has to do with the opposition, as Tennessee boasts one of the best secondaries in football.
Both Sneed and Awuzie were the best cornerbacks on their respective teams in 2023. Up front, Harold Landry and Arden Key combined for 16.5 sacks with the Titans last year.
Meanwhile, Tennessee will continue to be a run-first offense even without Henry. If nothing else, that will at least keep the clock moving and shorten the game. Although 45.0 is not a huge number, it is big enough that the Under is the way to play this contest.
