The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions met in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last year with the Lions running out 31-23 winners.
Now the pair face off on Week 2 of the new NFL season after both secured wins in their first game of the campaign.
The total of 51.5 for this clash between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions is the highest of any game on Week 2 of the NFL season and there are plenty of reasons to think it may go under.
The Lions needed overtime to get past the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in Week 1, demonstrating the gritty nature of this team under Dan Campbell.
They managed to hold an explosive Rams’ offense to just 20 points and while the Bucs were dominant 37-20 winners over the Washington Commanders in Week 1, this is a significant step up in class on those opponents.
These two teams met in the regular season last year, with the Lions grinding out a 20-6 win.
Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield threw just 206 yards and had an interception in that game and while he may have been the only QB to throw four touchdowns last week, it’s hard not to come to the conclusion that the Commanders’ struggles may have been a key factor in that outcome.
Both of these teams were elite at stopping the run last year, ranking in the top five in the NFL for fewest yards allowed on the ground. Rushing has not been a particular strength of the Bucs in recent years and the Lions could lock that down once more.
Tampa will also look to put Jarred Goff under as much pressure as possible in this game, key Detroit tackle Taylor Decker allowed his highest pressure rate since 2018 last week, 11.1%, and Goff has not been strong under pressure.
The former LA Rams quarterback threw three touchdowns, eight interceptions and had a passer rating of 62.9% when under pressure in 2023.
If the Bucs defense gets to Goff, they could massively reduce his effectiveness and limit the scoring in this game.
The line simply looks too high in this one, with plenty of reasons on offer as to why the under will hit.
Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the most promising running backs in the NFL and he has repeatedly shown his qualities whenever he has been given the chance by the Detroit Lions.
David Montgomery still gets the majority of the carries for Detroit but Gibbs is such an explosive and dynamic player that he can often make a major impact even with limited opportunities.
The 22-year-old recorded 10 rushing and one receiving touchdown in the 2023 regular season and picked up where he left off in Week 1, claiming another rushing score.
The dual-threat option out of the back field is a big bonus for the Lions and Gibbs is fancied to score another touchdown in this game.
