US Sports - NFL: Season 2022/23 All You Need To Know

The NFL 2022/23 season gets under way next week as only the best of the 32 teams survive a battle for playoff berths and a shot at Super Bowl glory next February.

After an offseason packed with drama, now it's time for the football to do the talking with the first of 272 regular season games to feature the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams and the Buffalo Bills - the favourites to dethrone them this year.

The star-studded Rams team, +1100 to repeat, that ended a 22-year wait for the ultimate prize has seen some significant changes - including the departure of star outside linebacker Von Miller to Buffalo.

But the likes of Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp will be out to show him and his new Bills teammates that they don't intend to give up the Vince Lombardi Trophy without a fight when they meet in the kick-off Game on 9th September.

And Tom Brady is back, although he never really went away, as the most successful QB in the history of the game will give it one more shot with the +700 Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win an eighth ring at the age of 45.

When is the NFL Season?

The 2022 season is scheduled to begin with the kick-off Game between the Bills and Rams on Thursday September 9th and runs through to Super Bowl Sunday on February 12th, 2023 with the majority of the regular season and playoff games taking place on Sundays.

Where is the NFL Season?

A total of 267 regular-season games will be played across the United States with five more to be hosted overseas in Europe and Mexico.

London has been the stage for NFL regular season games since 2007 and will host two at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one at Wembley in 2022. The league makes its hotly-anticipated German debut in Munich and heads back to Mexico City's Azteca Stadium for the first time since 2019.

Among the most iconic NFL venues to host games this year will be Lambeau Field - home of the Green Bay Packers - and the Raiders' still-sparkling Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Can I watch the NFL Season?

This year's action will air across multiple networks and services, including marquee NFL broadcasters like Amazon Prime Video, CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, and NFL Network. But you'll need access to in-market and out-of-market viewing options to receive the most comprehensive game coverage.

How many times has the NFL Season taken place?

There have been 102 seasons of the National Football League, but the first Super Bowl didn't take place until after the NFL-AFL merger of 1966.

That was when the Green Bay Packers, coached by the legendary Lombardi whose name now adorns the ultimate prize, defeated the Kansas City Chiefs at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

There have been 56 Super Bowls to date with the Rams victorious at their own SoFi Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI last February.

Who has won the Super Bowl on the most occasions?

The +1200 Packers have won the most championships with 13 in total, including four Super Bowls. The most successful teams of the modern era are the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots with six Super Bowls apiece, closely followed by the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys on five each.

Which team are the favourites for Super Bowl LVII?

The +600 Bills are still the only team to advance to four consecutive Super Bowls, but also hold the dubious distinction of losing all four of them between 1990 and 1993.

Bills fans are still haunted by the unlucky elimination from last season's playoffs at the hands of Patrick Mahomes, when the Kansas City Chiefs capped a frantic final two minutes with the tying score before giving Buffalo no right of reply in overtime.

If quarterback Josh Allen had called "heads" instead of "tails," many believe the Bills might be entering this season as the defending Super Bowl champions.

The playoff overtime rule has since been amended to allow both teams to possess the ball regardless of whether a touchdown is scored on the first possession of the extra period.

Nevertheless, following back-to-back division titles, three straight playoff seasons and two painful postseason defeats to the Chiefs, expectations are sky high in upstate New York.

The Super Bowl favourites will be all out for revenge this year and looking to secure home-field advantage for any possible grudge match in the playoffs.
