The Philadelphia Eagles are on a nine-game winning streak and will look to extend that to 10 when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have been one of the big surprises of the NFL season thanks to Mike Tomlin’s coaching and Russell Wilson's QB play.
The Eagles enter this battle of Pennsylvania coming off a narrow win over the 3-10 Carolina Panthers by a 22-16 score. After the game, star WR AJ Brown said the team needs to work on its passing, and that criticism has been one of the major storylines entering Week 15.
Pittsburgh most recently beat the Cleveland Browns and have a two-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North, and Tomlin's team has defied expectations at every turn.
The Steelers came into this NFL season without many observers giving them any chance of success, but they have continually proven those preseason predictions to be wrong.
They are first in the AFC North with a record of 10-3 as Wilson has continued to turn his career around under Tomlin.
Wilson has 1,784 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns and three interceptions with a 64.8 completion percentage.
However he faces his toughest challenge of the season against an Eagles defense that has been elite this year.
The Eagles are first in total defense, allowing 284.2 total yards per game, and have a number of difference-makers on that side of the ball, with their secondary of Reed Blankenship, CJ Gardner-Johnson, and rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean proving lights out.
They are a major reason why Philadelphia is 11-2, and only the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions have a better record than the Eagles.
The acquisition of Saquon Barkley has proven to be a masterstroke for the Birds this season too, as the running back is putting up MVP-level numbers for his new team since arriving from the New York Giants.
He has 1,623 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 266 carries, and he has caught 29 passes for 267 yards and two scores. Barkley's touchdown tally would surely be higher if it wasn’t for QB Jalen Hurts' ability to execute the Tush Push at the goal line, which has contributed to 13 scores for the QB.
The combination of Hurts and Barkley’s efforts on the ground have made the Eagles the most formidable rushing team in the NFL by some distance and this has caused some issues among Philadelphia’s receivers, most notably AJ Brown.
It will be interesting to see how much of the ball Brown gets in this game after his public criticism of the team.
The Steelers’ defense has been among the best in the league this year, their 18.3 points allowed per game is fifth in the NFL and they are one of just six teams to allow fewer than 100 yards rushing per game.
With both teams possessing top defenses, this could become a low-scoring game in Philly.
The likely absence of Pittsburgh’s star receiver George Pickens is also a big blow for the Steelers and Russell Wilson so take the under in what looks likely to be an encounter in which yards are hard to come by.
Wilson has undoubtedly been impressive this season, but he faces his toughest test yet against this Philadelphia defense, which is allowing just 6.1 yards per attempt this season, the best figure in the league.
Wilson is coming off a game against the Cleveland Browns where he threw for 158 yards without star receiver George Pickens and it looks unlikely that Pickens will be fit to suit up in Philadelphia.
Without him, and up against one of the best passing defenses in the NFL, Wilson could struggle to move the ball effectively and it could be smart to back him going Under the line of 196.5 passing yards.
