New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: Picks and Predictions

The New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers have both been in the news this week in advance of their Sunday night showdown at Acrisure Stadium.

The Jets have pressed the alarm button after a disappointing 2-4 start to the season and traded for wide receiver Davante Adams, who has left the Las Vegas Raiders to renew his links with former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers.

The Jets' 23-20 loss to the Bills on Monday night was their third successive defeat and followed the unexpected early firing of head coach Robert Saleh.

The Steelers have again produced better results than many expected under head coach Mike Tomlin and are in the hunt for a return to the playoffs after winning four of their first six games.

Justin Fields has started at quarterback in every outing so far, but the team could make a change for this game now that the more experienced Russell Wilson has recovered from a calf injury.

New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers betting picks and predictions

Steelers +1.5 (-110)

The Steelers are probably used to being underestimated at this point, but in this case, it may be the Jets being overrated that has led to the value in siding with the home underdogs.

The Jets are clearly expected to take a leap forward after signing Adams to bolster their offense, but while he has a rapport with his quarterback from their time together in Green Bay, it shouldn't be expected that he will slot seamlessly into the Jets lineup just days after switching teams.

Adams had only 209 receiving yards in Las Vegas this season before missing their last three games with a hamstring issue, but moving teams appears to have been the charm for his health and he is expected to suit up in Pennsylvania.

The Jets' last two losses came against playoff-quality teams in the Bills and Vikings, while their only victories this season have come against a pair of one-win teams in the Patriots and Titans.

Their other two losses came against solid defensive teams in the 49ers and Broncos, and the Steelers fit comfortably in that description.

Tomlin's squad ranks second in league in points allowed per game at just 14.3 and eighth in yards allowed per game at 294.2. They have a plus-seven turnover differential after snatching seven interceptions and grabbing four fumbles, while their offense has lost the ball just four times.

The Steelers showed little mercy to Adams' former team, the Raiders, last week in a 32-13 road win that was their most dominant performance of the season. Their two losses preceded that game, and they were both by just three points to each of the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts.

The Steelers switching to Wilson at QB would be something of a wild card, and he was not the dynamic player we saw in Seattle during his two-year stint with the Broncos.

However, as the Steelers average only just over 20 points per game with Fields starting, there may not be much for them to lose from turning to Wilson, who was named as their intended starter before his preseason injury.

The scheduling situation also favors the Steelers. The Jets traveled on a short week after playing the Buffalo Bills on Monday, while the game against the Bills followed straight on from their trip to London to play the Vikings.

Breece Hall Over 92.5 rushing and receiving yards (-115)

The Jets' trade for Davante Adams could damage the short-term productivity of their current leading receiver Garrett Wilson, but another member of the team's star-studded 2022 draft class had a big game on Monday night and could be their main threat in Pittsburgh, too.

Running back Breece Hall was taken after cornerback Sauce Gardner, Wilson and defensive end Jermaine Johnson in that draft and has become a key player in their offense.

Hall can run hot and cold, but he has gone over his rushing and receiving yards line for this game in three of his six appearances this year and looks capable of doing so again coming off a big night against the Bills.

The Iowa State product had 113 rushing yards on 18 carries and 56 receiving yards when catching five passes from six targets against the Bills.

The Steelers are higher in the defensive rankings for points against than yards allowed as they have a habit of forcing crucial turnovers when their end zone is threatened, so it's quite possible for Hall to get his yards even if the Steelers win the game.
