New York Jets finally ended their misery against the New England Patriots last year, winning on the road to stop a 15-game losing streak against their division rivals, and they'll look to make it two in a row on Thursday night.
However, New England has still won eight straight on the road against the Jets, and that is the next streak New York is looking to vanquish.
Both teams are 1-1, with the Patriots falling in overtime at home to the Seattle Seahawks 23-20 and the Jets going on the road to knock off the Tennessee Titans 24-17 in Week 2.
Below are our experts' picks and predictions for the contest.
It’s tempting to take the Jets in their home opener, with Aaron Rodgers now comfortably under center. He’s thrown for 343 yards and three touchdowns against just one interception in two road games so far this season.
After losing to the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers to open the campaign, the Jets got the job done in Tennessee against the Titans.
But it wasn’t overly impressive from an offensive standpoint. Offensive stalwarts Breece Hall (14 rushes for 62 yards) and Garrett Wilson (four catches for 57 yards) were held in check and Rodgers' numbers (18/30, 176 yards) were average at best.
Getting a win is great, but New York has done little to suggest that they can score at will.
Meanwhile, the Patriots are about as vanilla as can be offensively. Jacoby Brissett has thrown for just 260 yards in two games and that includes a total of just 11 completions for 85 yards to his wide receivers.
New England’s game plan is fairly obvious: play mistake-free football, don’t turn the ball over, win the field position battle and let the defense keep the team in games.
That philosophy held true in a 16-10 victory at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, but cost the team late in the overtime loss at home to the Seahawks.
The Patriots only scored on two of their four red zone possessions and are averaging just 18 points per contest.
But, the Pats are only allowing 15.5 points a game. And, New England is 18-2 straight up in its last 20 against the Jets, including 11-8-1 against the spread.
The Patriots are 4-0 ATS in their last four road contests and the feeling here is that neither team will score enough to justify a 6.5-point spread, so look for New England to cover in a close game.
This is a tough total to bid the under on, but this is a matchup that justifies it. The teams have played to the Under in seven of the last eight contests in New York.
That includes New England’s 15-10 victory over the Jets at MetLife Stadium last season. In fact, the two teams combined for 45 points total in two games last year.
Rodgers is in play now of course, but the scoreboard should not light up often in Thursday night’s contest.
At best, we see a 21-17 final, which would secure Under 38.5 total points.
