Doug Pederson, fighting for his coaching future in Jacksonville, takes the Jaguars on the road to the city where he tasted NFL Championship glory to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
The 2-6 Jags might be pushed out of playoff contention before Thanksgiving if they don’t string a few wins together soon.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has improved in recent weeks to give them some hope of making a recovery, but the move to trade starting left tackle Cam Robinson to the Minnesota Vikings for future draft capital this week suggests belief is waning.
Meanwhile, the 5-2 Eagles are on a three-game winning run after fixing the turnover issues that dogged them at the start of the year.
Philly beat a better team than the Jags when crushing the Cincinnati Bengals 37-17 on the road last week and their only home loss this year was by a single point to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.
The Eagles look good enough to cover the spread this week after proving too strong for the Bengals at Paycor Stadium last Sunday.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley were the stars of the show as Philadelphia executed at a high level on both sides of the ball.
Hurts seems to have shaken off his turnover trouble with a third straight interception-free game as he rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another in Ohio.
Barkley posted his fourth 100-yard rushing performance of the year, although he may find gaps harder to exploit against a Jags defense that is among the top-10 in the league for stopping the run.
That is about all Pederson’s team have managed to do well this year, with Jacksonville ranking outside the top-20 for scoring on offense and inside the league’s bottom four for points allowed.
After consecutive 9-8 seasons in Jacksonville, Pederson’s team have regressed to leave him coaching for his job.
They will be without a couple of key offensive playmakers for this game too, with leading wideout Christian Kirk out for the season and star rookie Brian Thomas struggling with a chest injury.
It looks like a tough task for them to keep the red-hot Eagles in check here and the home team ought to secure victory by more than a touchdown for a third straight game.
One of the main reasons why Jacksonville’s defense has struggled is that they have been regularly hurt by big plays, most of them through the air.
Through eight weeks, the Jaguars have given up passing completions of 45, 51, 63, 65, 67 and 80 yards.
They currently rank 31st in the league in passing yards allowed and are tied for last in TD passes surrendered (17).
It’s a weakness that the Eagles will be looking to punish again with their vertical passing attack which has yielded some eye-catching touchdowns already this season.
Hurts found DeVonta Smith from 45-yards out against the Bengals, mirroring a similar scoring hookup from the Cleveland Browns game two weeks before.
The quarterback also connected with A.J. Brown for a 41-yard touchdown pass in Week 7.
And when you factor in Barkley’s 65-yard TD run against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, the Eagles have scored touchdowns of 40-plus yards in four of their last five games.
Tank Bigsby has become the Jaguars’ go-to guy in recent weeks as Travis Etienne Jr has struggled with a hamstring injury.
With Etienne a game-time decision to play this week, Bigsby can expect to see plenty of work again.
The second-year pro, who has had a higher snap count than Etienne in each of the past four weeks, averages a healthy 5.8 yards per carry this season.
He went over 100 yards with a pair of TDs in each of Jacksonville’s two wins this season and will be at the front of the queue to take the hand-off in any goalline situations.
