Houston Texans vs. New York Jets: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The New York Jets and the Houston Texans will kick off the Week 9 NFL slate at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night.

Both teams were expected to be playoff contenders this season but only the visitors are on track to achieve that goal after the teams made contrasting starts to the 2024 season.

The Texans are 6-2 after Sunday's important AFC South victory over the Indianapolis Colts. They haven't always looked like the slick passing offense that was a feature of their playoff run last season, but they have been hard to beat as their only losses were on the road to the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers.

The 2-6 Jets are running out of options to spark their season into life, having already fired head coach Robert Saleh and added to their firepower with a trade for wide receiver Davante Adams, but interim coach Jeff Ulbrich is 0-3 since taking over.

Sunday's 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots - a game they went into favored by over a touchdown - won't have helped the mood at MetLife Stadium, so the Jets will be placing extra importance on a home win in this primetime clash.

Houston Texans vs. New York Jets betting picks and predictions

Texans +1.0 (-115)

The Jets are on a five-game losing streak and with a tough schedule ahead of them - starting with hosting the Texans - their play-off hopes look to be effectively over.

With this game priced as a pick 'em, taking the 6-2 team over the 2-6 Jets has plenty of appeal.

The Texans' two defeats this season have both come on the road, but they did a professional job on their last visit to an AFC East team, crushing the Patriots - who the Jets just lost to - 41-21 in Week 6.

The Jets already have three home losses - against the Broncos, Vikings and Bills - and since all of those defeats were by six or fewer points, the Texans are the underdogs for this game.

The Jets appear to be getting worse if anything, with their last two losses being a 37-15 beatdown in Pittsburgh and the upset loss to the struggling Patriots, and they could have their hands full against a dynamic Texans team.

The Texans are coming off a couple of tight games, losing to the Packers on a field goal as time expired before hanging on against the Colts, but they may not have to break a sweat to move to 7-2 in New York.

Garrett Wilson Over 63.5 receiving yards (-110)

One bright spot for the Jets in recent games has been the production of wide receiver Garrett Wilson after the former Ohio State star made a slow start to his second NFL season.

Wilson failed to post more than 60 receiving yards in his first four games with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback but has found his form since the Jets' trip to London to play the Vikings, going over the 100-yard mark in three of his last four games.

The Texans have one of the more talented defenses in the league, but they can still give up plenty of yards to opposing wideouts. Josh Downs of the Colts had 109 against them on Sunday, Romeo Doubs of the Packers had 94 the previous week, and DeMario Douglas of the Patriots had 92 in his team's heavy loss to Houston.

Ka'imi Fairbairn Over 7.5 kicking points (-110)

Houston's Ka'imi Fairbairn has been one of the best kickers in the league this season and should be able to make another solid contribution in New York.

Only Austin Seibert of the Commanders has made more field goals than Fairbairn's 19 from 21 attempts this season. The Texans placekicker has been deadly from long range, making nine of his 10 kicks from 50 yards or further, which is the most in the NFL.

Fairbairn has scored 10 or more points in each of his last four games and should be in for a successful trip to New York.
