The Minnesota Vikings are the current favorites to land former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
Here we take a look at where the Michigan star could start his professional career.
Minnesota Vikings | +140 |
New England Patriots | +200 |
New York Giants | +300 |
Denver Broncos | +400 |
Washington Commanders | +1400 |
Las Vegas Raiders | +1600 |
The Minnesota Vikings, who hold the 11th-overall pick, are the favourites to take McCarthy and they are firmly in the market for a new signal-caller following the departure of veteran QB Kirk Cousins to Atlanta.
Playing home games indoors would be a massive benefit to a young player adapting to the demands of the professional game and McCarthy’s eyes may light up at the chance of heading to Minneapolis.
If he headed there he would not only be the main man but also benefit from two excellent receivers in Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, in addition to tight end TJ Hockenson.
All the right pieces of the jigsaw could be there, but Minnesota may have to trade up to bring this partnership to fruition.
Patriots fans could be extremely excited about the prospect of drafting a young quarterback from Michigan, given the amazing career Tom Brady enjoyed at Foxborough after joining from that program in 1999.
There is a chance that he could land in their laps at number three and his selection would no doubt galvanize a fanbase who have not been used to having such early draft picks over the last couple of decades.
McCarthy’s leadership skills that he displayed in helping Michigan to the National Championship will have impressed the Patriots and he may have done enough to encourage them into gambling that history could repeat itself in regards to taking QBs from Michigan.
Washington were joint-second-favorites to take McCarthy. They hold the second-overall pick, meaning they are almost guaranteed to have a chance to choose McCarthy.
There has been a lot of talk in the capital media that McCarthy could be the answer to the Commanders’ problems under center, but there are plenty of other QB candidates who could fill that role.
McCarthy reportedly impressed on his pro day, but the Commanders are also considering LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
The Giants are reportedly happy with Daniel Jones being their future QB1, but he is due to return from knee surgery and there are suggestions that the front office may look at reinforcing that key position.
Last year's backups Tyrod Taylor and Tommy Devito were not helped in Jones’s absence by injuries to the offensive line. While the Giants may look to reinforce the trenches, they might not pass up the chance to pick McCarthy with their sixth-overall pick.
One team who are definitely in the market for a QB is the Denver Broncos after the departure of Russell Wilson.
It could be a case of the right player appearing at just the right time and should he go to the Broncos, McCarthy could reap the benefits of working with an experienced head coach in Sean Payton.
Denver was one of the worst teams on the offensive side of the ball last season and drafting McCarthy would signal that the team wants to change that in the 2024 season. The biggest issue against him ending up at Mile High is that their first pick is at 12 and McCarthy may have been snapped up by then.
The Las Vegas Raiders have the sixth-shortest odds to take McCarthy.
McCarthy would not be an automatic starter as Aiden O’Connell and Gardner Minshew are already in the building, so the Raiders and their new defensive-minded head coach Antonio Pierce are less likely to take McCarthy than other teams who have no talent under center.
The QB would get the opportunity to link up with a quality wide receiver in Davante Adams in Sin City, but it cannot be ignored the Raiders are 13th on the list for the big night and that McCarthy's draft stock is only rising.
