The Washington Commanders are the current favorites to land former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
The NFL Draft is fast approaching, as the latest crop of college superstars prepare to officially enter the league in just over two weeks time.
LSU Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels has shot up draft boards over the past few months, and he is now expected to go within the first few picks.
Let's assess where Daniels might land come April 25.
Washington Commanders | -175 |
New England Patriots | +175 |
Minnesota Vikings | +500 |
Las Vegas Raiders | +1200 |
Chicago Bears | +1600 |
New York Giants | +1600 |
The Commanders are the overwhelming favorite to land Daniels with the second pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. Pundits believe Daniels, who completed 72% of his passes for 3,812 yards and rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall, is most likely going to end up in Washington, D.C.
North Carolina’s Drake Maye and Michigan’s JJ McCarthy are also being bandied about as prospects for the Commanders’ pick. Daniels is scheduled to visit with the Commanders and new head coach Dan Quinn on Monday. His former coach at LSU, Brian Kelly, let slip in a press conference recently that he believes Daniels will be drafted by the Commanders.
It’s the dawn of a new era in New England, as Bill Belichick stepped down in the offseason and former Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo was named the new head coach. A massive rebuild is in the offing, and the Patriots must have a strong overall draft, with eight current picks in tow.
Their first pick is No. 3 overall, and unless they choose to trade back, they will most likely have the choice of who’s remaining from USC quarterback Caleb Williams, Daniels, and Maye.
New England signed quarterback Jacoby Brissett recently, possibly with the understanding that he would be the starter this upcoming season, while Daniels or one of the other quarterbacks learns the ropes.
The Vikings have solid odds here because franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons after six seasons in Minnesota. Sam Darnold was signed from San Francisco, but the Vikings will certainly be a player in the quarterback sweepstakes in the draft.
The question here is whether the Vikings can move up high enough from the 11th pick in the first round, where they currently sit. Minnesota has brought in Maye, McCarthy, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., and Oregon’s Bo Nix for private workouts, but not Daniels.
The Vikings did attend LSU’s pro day, however, so Daniels may still be a consideration as the team strategizes about movement in the draft.
The Jimmy Garoppolo era is mercifully over in Las Vegas after just seven games. Aidan O’Connell returns after leading the team with 2,218 yards and 12 touchdowns passing, and Gardner Minshew II signed from Indianapolis, but new head coach Antnio Pierce would love to have a new foundation under center to build around. Pierce is reported to be very high on Daniels.
Like the Vikings, the problem here is draft position. Minnesota currently has the 13th pick in the first round and would need to offer a tantalizing package to Washington or New England to move up and grab a dynamic rookie quarterback.
It’s interesting that the Bears are this high on the list because they have the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and Williams is set to head to the Windy City, barring a trade down from the top slot.
However, the Bears are thin in total draft collateral, with just four picks overall, thanks to a series of deals that have brought them starters like Montez Sweat, Keenan Allen, and Ryan Bates. They have two picks in the first round (1st and 9th), but just four draft picks overall.
Trading down from the first pick might restock those picks and still put Chicago in a good place to grab another quarterback, like Daniels.
The Giants’ place in these odds represents a vote of no confidence in incumbent starter Daniel Jones, who played in just six games, throwing two touchdowns and six interceptions, after signing a 4-year, $160 million contract extension last May.
Jones, fan favorite Tommy DeVito and free agent Drew Lock are on the team’s depth chart right now. However, New York holds the sixth pick in the draft and are in prime position to move up and select from one of the top signal callers available. This includes Daniels, who is scheduled to visit with the Giants on Monday as well.
