One key game in the early window on Sunday is the NFC East showdown in the Nation’s Capital between the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders.
Dallas (3-7) has seemed lost without Dak Prescott at quarterback, while Washington (7-4) has become a young and exciting team led by Jayden Daniels.
Let’s preview this matchup between division rivals and see our expert’s best bets.
The Cowboys have played two full games without Dak Prescott and have been outscored 68-16.
First, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated Dallas 34-6 as Cooper Rush managed just 45 passing yards, then the Houston Texans embarrassed the Cowboys 34-10 in primetime last week.
All hope of a good season has disappeared with Prescott’s injury and the Cowboys are now just battling the Giants to stay out of last place in the NFC East.
Prescott’s absence has obviously been a major cause for Dallas’ recent struggles, but it hasn’t just been him. Even when he was under center, the Cowboys run game was non-existent since Rico Dowdle was getting only 10-12 touches a game.
Plus, the Dallas defense has been one of the worst units in all of football. They have allowed the second most rushing yards and the second most points per game this season. That means Brian Robinson Jr., Austin Ekeler, and Jayden Daniels are in for a big day on the ground.
For the first two months of the season Daniels was the clear-cut Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Commanders were 7-2 after 9 weeks and it seemed the Heisman winner had completely changed the culture in Washington.
Admittedly, the Commanders have hit a rough patch recently as they’ve lost back-to-back games, but those defeats have come from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Eagles, who have each become legitimate NFL Championship contenders.
The two losses were also by a combined nine points which shows they’ve still been competitive even when they lose.
With that said, this game shouldn’t be close. Oddsmakers have listed the Commanders as double-digit favorites for a reason and it helps that they will be on extra rest considering they haven’t played since Thursday Night Football in Week 11.
All the signs point to another blowout loss for the Cowboys, so keep fading Rush and Dallas in Week 12.
In the two games the Cowboys have played without Prescott, the games have finished with 40 and 44 points and Dallas has contributed just 16 points in those games combined.
Here’s the issue why the Cowboys still won’t break through offensively in Week 12 - the Commanders secondary is elite. In Week 10, Rush had to take on the Eagles secondary, which is currently allowing the second-fewest passing yards per game.
Expectations weren’t high for Rush because of that and the Cowboys finished with just six points. Fast forward a week and the Cowboys were taking on the Texans on Monday Night Football, but, unfortunately for Dallas, the Houston secondary is currently allowing the sixth fewest passing yards per game.
It was back-to-back difficult games for Rush and he finished with just 10 points against the Texans. To his disappointment, it won’t get easier in Week 12.
The Commanders are currently allowing the fifth-fewest passing yards per game. That’s going to continue to make Rush’s life difficult in the pocket.
And, although Washington struggles against the run, the Cowboys have one of the worst running games in football and won’t be able to take advantage of that weakness.
Expect the Commanders to score a lot. With a spread north of 10 and a total in the mid 40s, the oddsmakers are expecting a pretty one-sided affair.
Even if Washington scores 27 or more, the Cowboys have proven to be so bad on offense that it shouldn’t be a problem for the Under.
Plus, tight end Jake Ferguson is doubtful for Sunday because of a concussion he suffered on Monday night and that takes away an elite option for Rush.
That means Rush is going to be looking for CeeDee Lamb, Luke Schoonmaker, and KaVontae Turpin throughout the game and, unfortunately for him, that will be pretty obvious for the Commanders defense.
Anticipate a similar offensive performance from the last few weeks out of Dallas, so back the Under in Washington.
