The Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns will both be hoping for better this season after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in 2023, and their clash this Sunday is one of the highlights of the first NFL slate of the season.
The Cowboys flattered to deceive again, taking advantage of a late slump by the Philadelphia Eagles to win the NFC East with a 12-5 record, only to be crushed 48-32 at home by the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.
The Browns' Kevin Stefanski won the NFL Coach of the Year award after leading his team to an 11-5 record despite being forced into using five starting quarterbacks due to injuries, but all their good work was wasted when they were comfortably beaten by the Houston Texans in their first playoff game.
The Browns made a fast start to last season at home with an impressive 24-3 win over AFC North rivals the Cincinnati Bengals, and they will be hoping for a repeat performance in this season's home opener.
That was far from the only game-winning effort by their highly-rated offense in Ohio, as they also limited the Titans to three points at home, shut out the Cardinals, allowed the Steelers only 10 points and kept the 49ers down to 17 points in an unexpected win when starting original third-choice quarterback PJ Walker.
The Browns defense struggled to match those numbers on the road, and coordinator Jim Schwartz has had the whole summer to brood over his team's poor effort in their 45-14 playoff loss in Houston.
With Myles Garrett and Za'Darius Smith ready to lead the pass-rush and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah flying around in front of an elite secondary featuring Denzel Ward, Martin Emerson Jr., and Greg Newsome II, the Browns are in better health than they were for the majority of last week and will have a point to prove.
It would be helpful for the Browns if their defense comes up big as there are plenty of reasons for thinking their offense could get off to a slow start. The team have barely had a healthy offensive tackle through the summer with starters Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills both coming off surgery and Conklin may have to be deployed at left tackle in this game with Dawand Jones manning the right side.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson was 5-1 in his six starts last season and put in his best performance in a victory over the Baltimore Ravens the last time he was seen. His recovery from a shoulder injury has progressed relatively smoothly but he may well again be rusty after being out of action for so long.
Jerome Ford will again lead the ground attack with Nick Chubb still on the PUP list after his gruesome knee injury and while the Browns have the potential to become a more explosive offense this season under new coordinator Ken Dorsey, it may not be seen in their home debut against a strong Dallas defense led by Micah Parsons. Taking under 41 points looks like a sensible play for Week 1.
Even with the potential issues of the Browns offensive line and Watson's effectiveness on his return to action, it would be disappointing for the home team if new wide receiver Jerry Jeudy can't exceed a modest receiving yards line of 38.5.
Jeudy came out of Alabama in the first round of the 2020 draft but never fulfilled his huge potential in four seasons with the Broncos and has yet to record a 1,000-yard season, mostly due to a series of injury issues.
His talent is not in question though, and he has impressed throughout the Browns' training camp. Jeudy posted 39 or more receiving yards 11 times in his final season with the Broncos and has the potential to do far better in his new home.
The Cowboys are short-handed at cornerback with DaRon Bland starting the season on IR and with former Dallas star Amari Cooper commanding the attention of the visiting defence, Jeudy and tight end David Njoku could both benefit.
