After defeats for both teams in Week 1, the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars will be going in search of their first wins of the 2024 NFL season when they meet at EverBank Stadium on Sunday.
The Browns and quarterback Deshaun Watson had a game to forget in Week 1 as they suffered a 33-17 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys in Cleveland.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville will be wondering how they blew a 14-point lead in their 20-17 defeat at the Miami Dolphins on the opening weekend.
There is plenty of room for improvement for both these teams ahead of Sunday’s showdown, as both sides look to blow off the cobwebs in the fledgling stage of this 2024 NFL season and record their first win.
Below are our experts’ picks and predictions for the contest.
Scoring only a field goal in the first half against the Dallas Cowboys, there was plenty left to be desired about the Browns offense last weekend.
Watson endured a tough game and the Cowboys looked largely comfortable during the contest, especially with efficient second and third quarters where they scored 23 of their points.
As for the Jaguars, there were early signs of promise for head coach Doug Pederson and his side as Jacksonville scored a touchdown in both the first and second quarters against the Dolphins.
However, the points soon dried up for the Jaguars in Miami, as quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his side failed to land a single score in the second half.
Sunday’s game at EverBank Stadium will see two rusty offenses go head-to-head and, with the Browns defense also capable of limiting teams on their day, a low-scoring contest might well be on cards in Jacksonville.
As mentioned, when Watson looks back on his NFL career, last weekend’s defeat to the Cowboys will not be the first tape he jumps to first.
The stats certainly don’t make great reading, especially as Watson failed to land any of his 10 passing attempts at 15 yards or more against Dallas.
Watson looked a shadow of the player who impressed at the Houston Texans and the man from Gainesville, Georgia will have to improve significantly if the Browns are to make the playoffs this season.
Given his struggles through the air against the Cowboys, there is value to be had in looking at Watson throwing under 214.5 yards on Sunday against the Jaguars.
Opening his account on the first weekend with a touchdown against the Dolphins, Travis Etienne is worth considering in the anytime touchdown market this weekend.
The 25-year-old has shown what a danger he can be from close range on the ground, after he scored 11 touchdowns in the NFL regular season last term.
Already up and running for the new campaign with that touchdown against Miami, Etienne has the ability to penetrate this Browns defense at EverBank Stadium on Sunday.
