The Week 13 edition of Monday Night Football takes us to Colorado for a battle between the Cleveland Browns and Denver Broncos.
The Browns (3-8) are coming off a comeback win in the snow in Week 12 and seem to have a lot more potential with Jameis Winston at quarterback.
For the Broncos (7-5), they are looking for their third straight win and Bo Nix is hoping to strengthen his potential Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign.
Let’s preview this primetime matchup with our expert’s best bets.
The Browns were 1-6 with Deshaun Watson and are 2-2 with Jameis Winston, which really makes you wonder about Watson’s future in Cleveland.
Winston has done a great job since taking over as the starter as he’s led the Browns to wins over the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints.
Last week’s win was a memorable one since heavy snow was falling from the sky for most of the second half of the game and the entire field was covered by the start of the fourth quarter.
Russell Wilson led a fourth quarter comeback for the Steelers and they took the lead with only a few minutes remaining, but Winston had a little bit more magic up his sleeve as he led a game-winning drive downfield and scored with less than a minute left.
Jerry Jeudy was the leading receiver for Winston, while Nick Chubb ran for 59 yards on 20 carries, which included two touchdowns.
Cleveland will be well-rested for their Week 13 matchup in Denver, but it’s not going to be easy against a Broncos defense that are allowing the second-fewest points per game this season.
Nix has had a stellar rookie campaign. He had some growing pains in the first few weeks, but he’s looked like a franchise quarterback in the last two months.
He has posted a 16-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio from Week 4 to Week 12 and has even rushed for two scores during that span. That has propelled him into the Offensive Rookie of the Year award talks (+180 odds to win) and is only trailing Jayden Daniels (-250) in the market entering Week 13.
A strong performance in primetime this week could make the race even tighter.
But enough about Nix, it’s time to give the Denver defense their praise. The Broncos defense are allowing just 16.8 points per game, which only trails the Chargers.
In fact, they’ve held opponents to less than 20 points in nine of their last 10 games. It’s because they are surrendering the sixth-fewest rushing yards and the eighth-fewest passing yards per game.
The Broncos have taken a rebuilding year turned it into a possible playoff berth. With that said, they need to win on Monday to boost their chances and stay in the picture, so back the Broncos to cover this small spread.
Hopefully the Browns got used to the cold last week because it’ll be anything but balmy in Denver on Monday night. The forecast expects temperatures around freezing for most of the game which won’t affect either team too much since both teams are used to playing in the cold.
And, while primetime games have been pretty high-scoring lately, I’m expecting that trend to change on Monday Night Football.
The Denver defense have been a top three unit in football this season - especially at home. The Broncos have limited opponents to just 14.3 points per game in Denver this season as they’ve allowed 13, 18, 23, 14, and 6 points in those five games.
Based on that, I’m expecting the Browns to fall somewhere between 10 and 21 points.
It’s clear that the Browns' game plan involves having Winston attempt 30 to 45 passes a game since Chubb hasn’t found much of a rhythm on the ground yet, but Winston might run into some problems against an elite Broncos secondary.
The Broncos offense has looked phenomenal recently. They’ve scored 38 and 29 points in the last two weeks and Nix has become the new star in Denver.
I do think that the Broncos will do the majority of the scoring on Monday night since the Browns defense has taken a huge step back since last season.
With that said, Cleveland’s secondary is still middle of the pack. I’m expecting a score around 24-14 in favor of the Broncos, so back the Under in this primetime matchup.
