The Philadelphia Eagles dismissed the disastrous end to their 2023 season with a 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Brazil, and head back to the friendly confines of Lincoln Financial Field to face the visiting Atlanta Falcons.
Kirk Cousins and Co. came out of preseason picked as a sleeper in the NFC, but the Falcons came crashing down to earth in a 18-10 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers at home.
Will Philly improve to 2-0? Will Atlanta display a more palatable offense against a significantly weaker defense? Below are our experts’ picks and predictions for the contest.
The Eagles got off to a hot start in Sao Paulo in their Friday night opener. Jalen Hurts threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 33 yards, while import Saquon Barkley looked rejuvenated, adding 109 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
All of Philly’s stars were out that Friday evening, as A.J. Brown went for 119 yards and a touchdown, while DeVonta Smith added 84 yards on seven catches.
However, the Eagles’ much-maligned defense, one of the worst in the league last season, did allow 163 yards on the ground.
Atlanta will try and exploit that, while its new-look offense looks to right the ship after a subpar performance in the loss to the Steelers.
Cousins threw for just 137 yards while getting picked off twice, while the Falcons rushed for only 89 yards as the Steelers pushed the line and provided constant pressure all game.
The thought is that Atlanta will get going against a much inferior Eagles defense, but look for Philly to keep the strong early season vibes going and cover the 6.5-point spread at home.
This is a low total, but it’s taking into account Atlanta’s inability to move the ball offensively, juxtaposed against what is a potentially top defense keeping the Eagles’ offensive weapons in check.
Philadelphia totaled 63 points in last week’s game with the Packers, but the thought process here is that Atlanta’s defense will keep them in the 24-point range by minimizing big plays.
Despite the hype around Atlanta’s new-look offense, until it produces on the field in a regular season contest, it is right to doubt them. Cousins is normally very secure with the ball, so were the two interceptions more of an anomaly, or is this the start of a trend?
We see the Eagles emerging victorious in the 24-17 sphere, so look for the teams to total under 47 points.
Although the Falcons’ defense harassed Pittsburgh all game, Hurts and his shiny new toy in the backfield, Barkley, were already clicking.
Barkley’s ground game complements Philadelphia’s aerial attack and vice versa.
Najee Harris was able to total 70 yards rushing last week against the Falcons and we like Barkley to surpass that Monday night and go for more than 74.5 yards rushing.
