The New York Liberty are soaring, having won seven straight ahead of their WNBA Finals rematch with the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the two-time defending WNBA champion Aces are in a rough patch, having lost three of four.
The two teams face each other in Las Vegas in their first meeting of the season, with the last time the two teams played each other being when Las Vegas finished off a 3-1 WNBA Finals series victory.
Below are our experts’ picks and predictions for the contest.
The Liberty are getting points simply because they are the road team and because of the Aces’ pedigree the past few seasons, but New York is playing better basketball right now.
The Liberty have won seven straight, with a margin of victory of more than 13 points in those games. That win streak includes three victories on the road, and the last one was special.
Sabrina Ionescu led four Liberty players in double figures with 24 points in an 82-75 victory at Connecticut, knocking the Sun from the ranks of the unbeaten in the process. Nobody had been playing better than Connecticut up to that point.
That includes the Aces, who have lost three of four. Both A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young scored more than 30 points each in a 103-99 win over Phoenix Thursday night.
But Las Vegas has allowed 96 or more points in each of its last three games, so look for New York to take this Finals rematch on the road.
Although Stewart still leads the Liberty in scoring at 18.9 points a game, she has scored 18 or less in seven of the team’s last 10 outings.
That includes just 14 and 13 in recent wins over the Washington Mystics and Connecticut, respectively.
But she will be up for this contest, especially as she and Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson are constantly compared to each other, with the two having each won two of the last six WNBA MVP awards.
Look for Stewart’s modest recent points totals to get a boost in this game.
Wilson is simply having a monster season for the Aces. She leads the WNBA in scoring (28.6 ppg) and rebounding (11.7 rpg).
She has led Las Vegas in scoring in all but two games so far this season and she has even picked up her scoring load a bit recently, averaging more than 31 points over the last five games.
Las Vegas will need every point and rebound she can muster in this marquee matchup. Look for Wilson to score more than 28.5 points, something she has already done seven times this year.
Ionescu and Stewart have both led New York in scoring in five games this year. The fifth-year former first round pick out of Oregon is averaging 17.8 points a game and she leads the team with 5.5 assists per contest.
Ionescu is averaging nearly 20 points a game in the team’s last seven outings and she will be counted on for that kind of production, or more, Saturday night.
Look for Ionescu to surpass 17.5 points against the Aces.
