The New Orleans Saints will have a new starting quarterback in the 2025 regular season.

Last year's starter, Derek Carr, retired this offseason. He would have undergone shoulder surgery that would keep him out for all of 2025, but he felt that he "couldn't just take" the Saints' money.

Carr would have been entering year three of a four-year, $150 million contract that would have paid him $30 million in 2025 and 2026. Instead, his contract is off the books, and the Saints can now look to the future.

Ahead of the 2025 NFL regular season, let's take a look at the odds for the player to start at QB in Week 1 for the Saints.

The New Orleans Saints began looking to the future at the 2025 NFL Draft, when they selected former Louisville QB Tyler Shough with the 40th-overall pick, and Shough is the heavy -300 favorite to win the starting job.

The 2024 season was the first time Shough played double-digit games in a college football season, and in 12 games, he completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,195 yards and a 23-6 TD-INT ratio.

Second in the market at +210 is Spencer Rattler, the Saints' fifth-round pick in 2024. He went 0-6 as a starter last season, completing 57.0% of his pass attempts for 1,317 yards and a 4-5 TD-INT ratio. Rattler averaged 188.1 yards per game while posting a passer rating of 70.4 and a QBR of 40.3.

The player with the longest odds to be the Week 1 starter in New Orleans is Jake Haener at +4000. Haener, a fourth-round pick in 2023, appeared in eight games and started one — a 20-19 Week 15 loss to the Washington Commanders — in the 2024 season. He completed 46.2% of his 39 pass attempts for 226 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception.
