One of the games that is flying under the radar on Saturday’s Week 3 slate is an SEC matchup between Texas A&M and Florida in the swamp.
This will only be the fifth matchup between these teams and not only are they 2-2 straight up against each other, but this game comes at a crucial time for both programs. Both teams have suffered demoralizing losses to this point, and it’s hard to get a good read on either team yet given the variance in their results.
With both teams sitting at 1-1 on the season, this matchup could be a good barometer for how each team’s season will play out. Let’s get into our betting picks and predictions for Texas A&M vs. Florida in Gainesville.
After six disappointing seasons with Jimbo Fisher at the helm, Texas A&M fans expected a lot out of new head coach Mike Elko, formerly the head coach at Duke.
Suffering a season-opening loss against Notre Dame at home wasn’t the best outcome, but it was one that most could live with given that it was Elko’s first game in College Station. However, after Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois in embarrassing fashion in Week 2, it would be fair to question just how acceptable of a loss that actually was.
After being expected to take a step forward in his sophomore season, quarterback Conner Weigman has not looked great this year, posting a 52.3% completion percentage with only two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
The Aggies offense struggled against Notre Dame, posting only 246 yards of total offense against an Irish defense that just let Northern Illinois push them around a week previously. That doesn’t bode well for another game against high-level competition this week.
On the Florida side, the Gators have one of the toughest schedules in football, but a win against Texas A&M could turn their season around and the Gators have the talent to do it. Florida will alternate between veteran quarterback Graham Mertz — who had 20 touchdowns to just three interceptions in 2023 — and true freshman DJ Lagway, which gives Elko two very different types of players to prepare for on defense.
Conversely, Weigman is much more prone to interceptions and especially can’t be trusted in a hostile environment. The A&M offense should be stagnant once again on Saturday.
While Billy Napier’s tenure in Gainesville has been disappointing, he has gotten the Gators to show up in big games at home for the most part. Given that the Miami Hurricanes were just laying three points a few weeks ago in the swamp, this is way too much market disrespect for a Florida team that has the talent to pull off the upset on Saturday. Therefore, Florida +3.5 is our point spread prediction for this SEC matchup.
While the home team does have the slightly better offense on paper in this matchup, Florida still only registered 261 yards and 17 points against Miami in Week 1, so the Gators shouldn’t be expected to put up a ton of points on Saturday.
Mertz and Lagway provide a difficult challenge for Elko to scheme against, but the former defensive coordinator has a terrific defensive mind and should throw multiple complex looks at both quarterbacks, which could produce some stagnant offense as a result.
As for the visitors, Weigman’s numbers away from home have not been promising to this point in his career. This is easily one of the most hostile environments he’ll play in this season, which could lead to a couple of turnovers from the second-year starter.
Both teams should rely on their defenses to make plays and get off the field against a pair of offenses that have struggled early in the season. Let’s take the Under 46 for our game totals prediction for Saturday’s Texas A&M vs. Florida matchup.
