When two top-five teams in college football clash, it's always an event worth watching and this Saturday will be no exception.
The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs head to Austin, Texas, to take on the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in a game with massive College Football Playoff implications. Both teams boast plenty of talent, but one has shown vulnerabilities this season.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET at Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, and ABC will be broadcasting the game live.
While Texas has looked dominant, Georgia’s talent and coaching prowess make them a real threat to cover the spread and perhaps even pull off the upset.
Despite Texas’ commanding victories and No. 1 ranking, Georgia looks like an appealing underdog in this matchup.
The Bulldogs haven’t lived up to their preseason expectations, but they have enough talent to make this game a lot closer than some might expect.
If you’re feeling confident in Texas, taking alternative spreads like -6.5 or -9.5 could offer greater value, but Georgia is a solid pick to cover the short 3.5-point spread.
While Texas enters this game fresh off a dominant 34-3 win against Oklahoma, Georgia should not be overlooked. They may have struggled at times this season, particularly with consistency on offense, but Kirby Smart’s squad is battle-tested.
After all, Georgia has already played a then-top-5 opponent on the road and managed to rally from a 28-0 deficit against Alabama, even though they ultimately lost that game 41-34.
The Bulldogs’ defense, though younger and less physical than in past years, is still capable of giving Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers trouble. Ewers, returning from an oblique injury, showed rust against Oklahoma, throwing an interception and making errant throws.
While Texas has looked solid against good defenses like Michigan’s, Georgia’s young defense could still make life difficult for the Longhorns.
If Smart and his Georgia Bulldogs can force Ewers into a few key mistakes, the Bulldogs’ offense will have a chance to win or at least cover the spread, unlike Michigan or Oklahoma’s offense could.
Furthermore, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe’s dual-threat ability hurt Georgia in their only loss, rushing for 123 yards. Ewers, however, isn’t the same threat on the ground, which should allow Georgia to focus more on their pass defense.
Expect this game to hit the Over the 56-point total.
Georgia’s offense, led by quarterback Carson Beck, has been showing signs of improvement in recent weeks. Beck threw for 459 yards and three touchdowns in Georgia’s win over Mississippi State, and he will face a Texas defense that hasn’t been tested against an elite passing attack yet.
Texas has had success defending the pass, but they have not faced a quarterback with Beck’s skill set or receivers as dangerous as Georgia’s.
Michigan and Oklahoma, Texas’ best wins this season, do not possess the same level of balance and offensive firepower as Georgia.
Beck’s ability to stretch the field will be crucial and he should be able to find success against a Texas defense that ranks well statistically, but has yet to face a team with Georgia’s talent at the skill positions.
On the other side, Texas has looked like an offensive juggernaut, particularly when Ewers is on his game. The Longhorns rank sixth nationally in passing Expected Points Added (EPA), and they should find plenty of opportunities to move the ball against Georgia’s defense.
The Bulldogs’ pass defense, while still solid, ranks 59th in EPA and has allowed big plays throughout the season. Texas should be able to exploit those vulnerabilities, putting up enough points to help push this game over the total.
Additionally, Georgia may be forced into a more pass-heavy approach if Texas manages to jump out to an early lead.
This scenario could mirror Georgia’s comeback attempt against Alabama, where the Bulldogs were forced to throw to stay competitive.
With both teams boasting plenty of offensive weapons and the potential for quick-strike plays, the Over feels like a solid bet in this matchup.
