After a wild and wacky Week 1 of the College Football season, Week 2 is just a few days away and that means a plethora of games for College Football fans to enjoy.
The first full slate of action saw the reigning National Champions, No. 9 Michigan, play a close game until the fourth quarter, while most of the other top 10 teams won without much trouble.
Week 2 should provide more storylines, with most of the nation's top-ranked teams looking to continue to build momentum. A few high-profile team will play key in-conference games, too.
With games kicking off on Friday, let’s get into our expert’s picks, predictions and best bets for this Week 2 slate.
Our best bet on the Week 2 slate is Over 61.0 total points in the matchup between the Boise State Broncos and Oregon Ducks.
Oregon was tabbed as one of the best teams in the nation heading into the season, and while that is likely still the case, it wasn’t a particularly encouraging first effort in a 24-14 victory against an FCS team, Idaho.
The Ducks put up yards but were unable to translate that into points, and Dan Lanning’s group has plenty to sort out against one of the best teams in the Group of Five this week. Fortunately for Oregon, this Boise State defense might be the cure for any ailing offense this season.
The Broncos are undoubtedly a good team, but they have some real holes defensively. Those holes revealed themselves against Georgia Southern, who put up 461 yards of offense and were 12-of-19 on third down. Struggling to contain a Sun Belt offense is not what you want to put on film the week before playing a team like Oregon that can score in bunches.
Despite their issues defensively, this Boise State offense is going to be extremely successful all season long. Even beyond his school record six touchdowns last Saturday, RB Ashton Jeanty’s mere presence in the backfield makes defenses crash the box and puts pressure on their secondaries to hold up in isolation situations.
Oregon knows how great Jeanty is, but the Broncos didn’t just put up 651 yards last Saturday because of their ground game. With multiple capable wide receivers and tight ends, plus two running backs that are excellent at catching the ball out of the backfield, I’m expecting at least 24 points from Boise’s offense in this one.
On the other side, Dillon Gabriel and the Oregon offense should be able to get to 40 points against a Broncos defensive unit that hasn’t shown the ability to stop the pass. Therefore, taking Over 61.0 total points (-110) is our best bet for Week 2.
Another pick for Week 2 of the College Football season is to take the Kentucky Wildcats to win by double digits against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
This is more of a bet against the Gamecocks than it is an endorsement of the Wildcats, as South Carolina was extremely fortunate to escape with a victory over Old Dominion as three touchdown favorites in Week 1.
Shane Beamer’s team couldn’t get anything going offensively, mustering up just 288 yards (3.6 yards per play) and 23 points against an Old Dominion unit that is expected to be in the lower tier of Sun Belt defenses this season.
South Carolina’s defense also allowed 305 yards on 72 total plays, which didn’t help matters either.
What saved the Gamecocks last Saturday was the four turnovers they forced, including recovering a fumble deep in Monarchs territory to set up the game-winning touchdown. Don’t expect that to happen again this Saturday against a Kentucky team that typically looks to control the clock and plays disciplined football.
The Wildcats just rolled past a Sun Belt opponent in Southern Miss, and that momentum should continue into this week. Back the ‘Cats to win by at least 10 points on Saturday.
