After plenty of surprises over the first three weeks of the College Football season, Week 4 is just a few days away and that means a plethora of games for college football fans to enjoy.
The Week 3 slate wasn’t the most exciting in terms of upsets or high-profile matchups between ranked teams, but it still provided plenty of entertainment for college football fans and bettors alike. Will we see some major upsets this week, or will the chalk mostly hold for a second straight week?
Week 4 features high-profile tilts between conference rivals, plus games involving Group of 5 teams that could have a serious impact on the College Football Playoff race.
Without any further ado, it’s time to dig into the schedule and find some winners.
For our expert’s best bet on the Week 3 slate, take the San Jose State Spartans to cover the spread in this matchup against the Washington State Cougars.
This is one of the best situational spots of the week, as Washington State is fresh off an emotional win in the Apple Cup against in-state rival Washington, a game that came down to the final seconds.
Following that victory, Washington State will return home for this Friday night game on a short week against a mid-tier Mountain West opponent, with a road game against Boise State on deck. That’s a pretty difficult sandwich spot for a team that will likely still be riding off the high of last weekend’s result, and San Jose State could give the Cougars a real scare as a result.
San Jose State has quietly exceeded expectations to this point, as the Spartans hold a 3-0 record straight up and against the spread. Quarterback Emmett Brown leads this offense with nine touchdowns and nearly 1,000 passing yards through three games.
However, the real star is wide receiver Nick Nash, who is easily one of the best players in the Group of 5 that nobody talks about. Nash already has six touchdowns this season and is coming off a 17-reception effort in a Week 3 victory over Kennesaw State.
The Spartans should come out focused on both sides of the ball, and if Washington State starts out a bit sluggish, we feel even more confident in our San Jose State +13.5 (-110) prediction.
For our second pick for the Week 4 College Football slate, back the TCU Horned Frogs to cover this 2.5-point spread against the SMU Mustangs.
Heading into the season, SMU was a team that many sharp college football bettors were interested in backing in its first season in the ACC, while TCU was expected to be a program in no-man’s land. And while that still might be true about the Horned Frogs, the Mustangs have been one of the more disappointing teams in the nation through three weeks.
SMU barely survived a Week 0 encounter against Nevada, before losing as double digit favorites against BYU in Week 3 in a game where the Mustangs had three turnovers and averaged only 3.6 yards per play.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee announced that Kevin Jennings will be the starting quarterback going forward, a move that gives the Mustangs far lower of a ceiling offensively in the passing game compared to last season’s starter, Preston Stone.
SMU is also having major issues on the offensive line in pass protection, so this TCU defensive front should be able to generate consistent pressure on the quarterback in this one.
As for the Horned Frogs on offense, quarterback Josh Hoover has performed very well to this point in the season. Even in a loss to UCF last weekend, Hoover threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns. He should be able to at least somewhat replicate that success on Saturday.
With these programs trending in different directions at the moment, let’s take TCU -2.5 (-110) for our second college football Week 4 prediction.
For our final pick for Week 4 of the college football season, take Over 66.0 (-110) total points in this game between the Georgia Southern Eagles and Ole Miss Rebels.
Through the first couple of weeks of the season, it seems pretty clear that Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin wants his quarterback to be in the Heisman Trophy conversation. Kiffin has no problem running up the score in order to pad Jaxson Dart’s numbers, as the Rebels have tallied a combined 168 points over their first three non-conference games this season.
Don’t expect that mentality to change this Saturday, as Ole Miss hosts a Georgia Southern team that should be more than willing to oblige in a high-scoring affair. After all, the Eagles have already participated in a shootout against one excellent offense this season, as Georgia Southern allowed 56 points to Boise State in Week 1.
However, even in that loss, the Eagles dropped 45 points on a quality team, so this is an offense that can contribute to this game going over the total. Georgia Southern is averaging over 35 points per game on the season and quarterback J.C. French has been stellar to this point, tallying seven total touchdowns to zero interceptions through three games.
The Rebels should clear the 45-point mark once again (and possibly hit 50+), while Georgia Southern can be expected to post at least 17-20 points, especially if the Eagles get off to a strong start.
Therefore, let’s back Over 66.0 with our final College Football prediction for Week 4.
