The Florida State Seminoles will be looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss to Georgia Tech when they host the Boston College Eagles on Monday night.
Kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium is set for 7:30 PM ET, and this standalone primetime matchup will be televised on ESPN.
Florida State traveled across the pond to Ireland in “Week 0” and fell to the Yellow Jackets 24-21 on a field goal as time expired. Boston College is making its 2024 debut in this one.
Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to be made for Monday’s showdown
It goes without saying that the pressure is fully on Florida State following last weekend’s hiccup. The Seminoles may be able to survive a setback against Georgia Tech, but they certainly cannot afford a loss to Boston College.
Starting 0-2 – especially against two ACC rivals who are not expected to be at the top of the conference – would seriously damage FSU’s College Football Playoff hopes.
Finding the win column for the first time in 2024 may not be as easy as the 17-point spread suggests.
When a number is this big, an offense has to put up a lot of points to cover as favorites, but the Seminoles are in almost total rebuild mode on that side of the ball.
Jordan Travis is gone and DJ Uiagalelei is in at quarterback.
Growing pains can be expected, and last weekend’s performance certainly was painful. Uiagalelei’s ceiling is not particularly high and his floor is low. It’s a floor that he neared against the Yellow Jackets with an unspectacular performance, completing 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
The ‘Noles delivered a touchdown and two-point conversion on their opening drive but were relatively anemic the rest of the way.
Boston College visits Tallahassee with a new head coach in Bill O’Brien, and he is certainly not afraid of the moment. O’Brien, a Boston native, is an offensive-minded coach who gets to work with one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks across the nation in Thomas Castellanos.
The Eagles boast an elite offensive line and a potent running game, so they are the kind of squad who can control the tempo of the game and be competitive even against superior opponents.
Florida State should be able to secure a victory, but look for the visitors to cover a lofty spread.
The Under correlates nicely with the Eagles covering, because they will want to keep this contest relatively low scoring.
They are not going to beat the Seminoles in a shootout. Boston College will be eager to run the football and Florida State is happy to do the same. In other words, the clock will be moving and that should make for fewer scoring opportunities.
Even if the two teams go on occasional touchdown drives, it’s hard to run up the score when the clock is ticking.
It is imperative that the Eagles avoid mistakes. If they take care of the football, their offense should be able to prevent Florida State from dictating the game.
That’s not to say BC can be expected to run all over FSU. Despite several key departures to the NFL, the ‘Noles are loaded with talent on defense and they mostly held a dangerous Georgia Tech offense in check last Saturday.
This matchup is historically close and it will likely be close on Monday, too. If it is, it’s because two programs that pride themselves on defense and running the football live up to their identity. Let’s go with Under 50.0 total points.
