UConn vs. South Carolina Women: Picks, Predictions and Odds

Both the UConn Huskies and South Carolina Gamecocks have already lost once in February, and losing more than once in a month is out of the ordinary for these two esteemed programs. As such, urgency will be high on each side for their head-to-head showdown at South Carolina on Sunday.

The Huskies are 23-3 overall and ranked No. 7 in the nation, while the Gamecocks are 23-2 and come in at No. 4.

Read below to see our experts’ predictions for this intriguing matchup, which tips off at 1:00 pm ET on ABC.

UConn vs. South Carolina Women betting picks and predictions

South Carolina -6.5 (-105)

South Carolina heads into this weekend with only two losses. The first came at the hands of UCLA, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the country, and that was back on November 24. More recently the Gamecocks fell at Texas (then No. 4, currently No. 3) this past Sunday via a 66-62 decision.

Head coach Dawn Staley’s squad had previously won 17 games in a row and it bounced back from its setback against the Longhorns by humiliating Florida 101-63 on Thursday night.

Seventeen of South Carolina’s last 18 victories have come by double-digits, with the only exception being a 70-63 success at then-No. 18 Tennessee on January 27.

The Gamecocks do not have anyone on the roster averaging more than 12.9 points per game, but they are deep. Nine different women (not including Ashlyn Watkins, who would be a 10th but is out for the year with a torn ACL) are logging at least 14.4 minutes per contest and five are scoring at least 8.7 ppg.

Leading scorer Joyce Edwards has been especially hot in recent weeks, putting up 14 points or more in six of the last eight games, including performances of 17, 18, 18, 21 and 28 points - with the most recent 28-point barrage coming against Florida earlier this week.

UConn is also playing well, with 13 victories in its last 14 outings. However, it’s not like the Huskies’ 2024/25 resume is unbelievable – at least not by their lofty standards. They have lost to their two highest-ranked opponents (No. 7 USC and No. 8 Notre Dame, the latter by 11 points) and their best win is over No. 14 North Carolina.

The last time UConn went on the road to face an opponent with a winning record resulted in an 80-76 setback at Tennessee on February 6. Freshman forward Sarah Strong (16.1 ppg) is 4-for-14 from the field with a grand total of nine points over the past two games.

South Carolina has won four straight in the head-to-head series after destroying UConn 83-65 at home last February. Let’s back the Gamecocks to win and cover.

Under 137.5 total points (-110)

The under also looks like the right play for this matchup. After all, it’s hard to feel good about going with the over when SC’s formidable defense is part of the equation. The Gamecocks are allowing just 56.1 points per game and they are ranked No. 5 nationally in field-goal percentage defense (34.5 percent).

Opponents are also shooting a mere 28.2 percent from three-point range against South Carolina. Staley’s crew has held eight opponents to 50 points or fewer and no opponent has reached the 70 mark since December 5.

UConn has impressed on the defensive end, as well. In fact, that’s an understatement. The Huskies are third nationally in scoring defense (52.1 ppg) and No. 10 in field-goal percentage defense (35.4 percent).

Strong’s shooting touch may be off right now, but she is making up for it by protecting her own basket. She is averaging 2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per contest. Paige Bueckers is contributing 2.1 steals per game and UConn as a team is forcing 19.1 turnovers per outing.

All things considered, these elite defenses will likely rule the day – making the under the best bet to make.
