The seventh-ranked UConn Huskies travel to Washington, D.C. on Saturday to take on the Georgetown Hoyas at McDonough Arena. Coach Geno Auriemma’s team is 14-2 overall, 5-0 in Big East play, and riding a four-game streak coming in. The Huskies have already defeated the Hoyas this season with a 79-44 victory in Hartford last month.
All-American Paige Bueckers is expected to miss her second consecutive game after injuring her knee in Connecticut’s 83-52 win over Villanova on Sunday. The team did not miss a beat as Azzi Fudd scored a season-high 23 points, Allie Ziebell had 17 points, and Sarah Strong chipped in with 15 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in an 81-27 win over Xavier Wednesday.
The Hoyas have lost two straight and sit at 8-7 overall, including 1-3 in the Big East. They have lost 39 straight contests with the Huskies, dating back to 1993.
Even with Bueckers out, the Huskies are expected to make short work of Georgetown. But can Kelsey Ransom, the Big East’s leading scorer (20.6 ppg) and the league’s leading rebounder, Ariel Jenkins (10.4 rpg) spark an upset?
See below for our experts’ predictions for this conference showdown in the nation’s capital.
The Huskies have won 25 straight conference regular season contests. Despite Bueckers’ absence, there is no reason to believe that streak won’t be extended on Saturday.
Fudd, who has battled an assortment of injuries during her time in Storrs, flashed her star potential in the easy win over the Musketeers midweek. The Huskies are losing Bueckers’ 19.9 points per game, but Strong continues her solid freshman campaign, averaging 17.3 points and 7.8 rebounds. Fudd is dropping close to 10 points a game after her 23-point outburst against Xavier.
Ransom is coming off a season-high 35 points in a 77-62 victory over Villanova, the seventh time the senior guard has surpassed 25 points in a contest this season. However, the last time these two teams met, Ransom was held to two first-half points and seven overall, tied for her season low.
UConn is averaging just north of 79 points a game, while only allowing 51.5 points per. The 27.8 point differential is one of the best in women’s college basketball.
The Hoyas are scoring just 64.4 per game and allowing 61.1 per contest. In the first game, the Huskies scored 25 points off 19 Georgetown turnovers, while the Hoyas could only manage two points on nine UConn turnovers.
Even with Bueckers sidelined, look for UConn to post a similar result to the first contest between the two Big East squads and cover the 28.5-point spread as favorites.
UConn is going to get its points. The question is will Georgetown score enough points to make the over a possibility here. It looks doubtful. The Huskies held Georgetown to 19 first-half points and 44 overall in the first meeting.
Even with the Huskies’ offensive prowess, look for UConn and Georgetown to total less than 126.5 points.
