San Diego State vs. Connecticut: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

We’re through the first weekend of the tournament, and the field is down to 16 teams.

Although the first weekend wasn’t filled with upsets, this week’s matchups are loaded with talent, as 12 of the top 16 seeds survived the opening two rounds.

The UConn Huskies are defending their title from last year and started this year’s tournament by taking down Stetson and Northwestern by 39 and 17 points, respectively.

Now, they will battle San Diego State in a rematch of last year’s National Championship. The fifth-seeded Aztecs took down UAB 69-65 before they dominated Yale 85-57 in the second round.

Now, the two teams will battle for a spot in the last eight, and we’ve analyzed the matchup and made predictions for Thursday night's game.

San Diego State vs. Connecticut betting picks and predictions

UConn -11

UConn ranks #2 in adjusted offense and #8 in adjusted defense in KenPom, indicating how they can beat you in a shootout or rock fight.

However, one way to beat the Huskies is to beat them from behind the arc. In UConn's three losses this season, Kansas was 14-20 (70%) from three, Seton Hall was 3-8 (38%) and Creighton was 14-28 (50%), while the Huskies went just 11-28 (39%), 4-21 (19%) and 3-16 (19%) from deep in those three losses.

Unfortunately, the Aztecs hit just 31.8% of their three pointers (284th in the country), so they’ll have to beat the Huskies differently.

One big area that could determine the game will be the battle on the glass. UConn averages 38.7 rebounds per game (35th in the country), while SDSU pulls in 37.6 boards per contest (59th in the country).

The Huskies have the size advantage, and I’m not sure how the Aztecs will keep UConn big man Donovan Clingan off the glass. Adama Sanogo pulled in 10 rebounds in the National Championship last year, and I expect a similar performance from Clingan this year.

San Diego State has shot the ball extremely well through the first two games of the tournament, but this UConn team is a different monster. The Huskies have won eight straight NCAA Tournament games by an average of 29.3 points, and each of those victories have been by at least 13 points.

26 of their 33 victories this season came by 10 points or more, so the best way to use this San Diego State vs. Connecticut predictions is by betting on UConn -11.

Lamont Butler Over 9.5 Points

Although we think the Huskies will take down the Aztecs, the favorite selection from the array of San Diego State vs. Connecticut player props focuses on Lamont Butler. The Aztecs guard averages 9.4 points per game this season but has been scoring at a higher rate this March. Butler has 10, 13, 23, 16, 7, 15 and 9 points in San Diego State’s last seven games and has averaged 12 PPG through two games in the tournament.

When Butler faced UConn in last year’s title game, he finished with 13 points, and I anticipate a similar performance this week. The Huskies will focus on slowing down the Aztecs leading scorer, Jaedon Ledee (21.5 PPG), which should give Butler a few open threes. If he can knock down at least two from behind the arc, he should be well on his way to 10+.

Finally, Butler has scored 10+ in 11 of 15 games this season when he plays 30+ minutes. The Aztecs will need him for nearly every minute on Thursday, so place a bet on Lamont Butler Over 9.5 Points.
