Samford vs. Kansas: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The madness begins this week with the Round of 64 starting on Thursday, and the ailing Kansas Jayhawks look to get back in the win column against the Samford Bulldogs.

Samford, the No. 13 seed in the Midwest Region, won the Southern Conference tournament to earn a date with No. 4 Kansas, who lost to Cincinnati in the Big 12 tournament in a shocking upset.

The Bulldogs have opened as 7-point underdogs as oddsmakers are expecting the Jayhawks to bounce back from two straight losses, including a 30-point loss to South Region No. 1 seed Houston to end the regular season.

Kansas has lost four of their last five games, so Samford is catching the Jayhawks at a good time. Is a first round upset possible on Thursday night between these teams?

Samford vs. Kansas betting picks and predictions

Kansas -7 (-110)

The Jayhawks are faltering at the wrong time. Kansas has lost four of their last five games, but it’s important to give context for those losses.

The losses came from BYU, Baylor, Houston, and Cincinnati. Three of those four teams have been ranked in the top 25 for the last few months. So although the Jayhawks have double the amount of losses as the Bulldogs this season, it has been to elite teams.

Kansas has had a week off since their last game, so Hunter Dickinson, Johnny Furphy, and KJ Adams Jr. have had plenty of time to rest.

Samford has had a fantastic season in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won the conference rather easily, but the problem is they have not been tested much.

Samford played only one ranked team all season, and it was their first game of the year. That ranked opponent was Purdue, who won the game 98-45. Because Samford has limited action against elite opponents, Kansas should be able to take advantage in the first round.

Under 152.5 (-110)

The Jayhawks have announced that star player Kevin McCullar Jr. will miss the entire tournament with an injury.

That’s a huge loss for Kansas since McCullar Jr. averaged 18.3 points per game for Kansas. Without him, the Jayhawks are going to rely more on KJ Adams Jr. and Hunter Dickinson, but it’s going to be hard for the offense to be as dominant without their star. And looking at their last few games, Kansas has struggled to score points since the Jayhawks have scored 98 total points over their last two games.

Samford relies on its offense to win games while its defense has been criticized constantly this season. However, in a game like this, it’s hard to expect the Bulldogs to try and out-shoot Kansas since their offense isn’t as good.

Instead, Samford will need to turn to its defense to try and limit Adams Jr. on the perimeter and Dickinson in the paint. The loss of McCullar Jr. will be obvious in Kansas’ offense, so the under is the preferred choice.
