Purdue vs. UConn: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The UConn Huskies and the Purdue Boilermakers have been the two best teams in college basketball pretty much the entire season and it’s only fitting that they will go head-to-head for the national championship on Monday night in Glendale, Arizona.

With the game tipping off at 9:20 pm ET on TBS, it’s time to break down the betting odds and make our best bets.

Purdue vs. UConn betting picks and predictions

UConn Huskies -6.5

UConn was nothing short of dominant en route to the championship game. The Huskies beat Stetson by 39 points, Northwestern by 17, San Diego State by 30, Illinois by 25 and Alabama by 14. They led by at least 30 points in every game except against the Crimson Tide on Saturday night.

It is true that Purdue is more dangerous than any of those first five opponents, but this feels like a favorable matchup for UConn.

The Boilermakers’ offense obviously runs through 7-foot-4' center Zach Edey, the undisputed best player in the country.

However, the Huskies can counter with 7-foot-2’ center Donovan Clingan. UConn’s big man is an amazing defender, averaging 2.5 blocks per game this season and 3.6 during the tournament. Even a player of Edey’s strength and caliber won’t have an easy time scoring down low against Clingan.

If Clingan can contain Edey, UConn should be able to dominate with its depth. Head coach Dan Hurley uses eight guys who average at least 11.8 minutes per contest and another who logs 9.1.

Five players are scoring at least 11.0 points per game, led by Tristen Newton at 14.9 PPG. Purdue has only four guys who are averaging more than 6.7 PPG.

Under 145.5

If Purdue wants to be competitive, it will have to get defensive. That would be nothing new for head coach Matt Painter’s squad, which is known to put the clamps down on defense.

The Boilermakers allowed 50, 67, 68 and 66 points during their successful trek through the Midwest Region before limiting N.C. State to 50 in the national semifinals. They have not given up more than 70 points in regulation since March 5 (a 77-71 victory over a high-powered Illinois squad).

As for UConn, it held its first four tournament opponents to no more than 58 points and it kept Alabama to a modest 72. Keep in mind that the Crimson Tide averaged more than 90 points per game throughout the season.

The matchup between Edey and Clingan will be must-watch television. It’s one that also one that has the makings of a low-scoring, physical slugfest as opposed to a points barrage.

Fletcher Loyer Over 1.5 three-pointers made

Edey will have to deal with the most formidable defender he has seen all season long in Clingan. Points in the paint won’t be as easy to come by for the Boilermakers as they have been throughout the 2023-24 campaign, so they may have to be more perimeter oriented than usual on Monday.

That’s where Loyer comes into play. The sophomore guard drained a trio of three-pointers against N.C. State and has made multiple threes in three of five tournament games. He has made multiple threes in six of the last 10 games dating back to the regular season, including four against Michigan State in early March.

Each of UConn’s last two opponents has attempted 23 three-pointers, of which Alabama made 11 on Saturday night. Before that San Diego State forked up 22 triples in the Sweet 16. If Purdue produces a similar volume, you can be sure Loyer will be heavily involved.
