Michigan State Spartans vs North Carolina Tar Heels: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The second round of the tournament begins on Saturday afternoon, and one of the most anticipated matchups is between Michigan State and North Carolina.

The Spartans easily beat Mississippi State in the first round as Tyson Walker led the team in scoring. As for North Carolina, it is the #1 seed, and the Tar Heels defeated the #16 seed Wagner by nearly 30 points. With both teams coming off big wins, it will be interesting to see which team keeps the momentum going on Saturday.

North Carolina has been tabbed as 4-point favorites for today’s game. After their dominating win in the first round, some analysts expected the spread to be larger. However, Michigan State also looked very strong in the opening round. With two high-powered offenses, which team will come out on top?

Michigan State vs. North Carolina betting picks and predictions

North Carolina -4

Everything was working for North Carolina in the first round. Armando Bacot finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds as he dominated the paint and was getting every look he wanted.

On the perimeter, RJ Davis had 22 points and Cormac Ryan pitched in 13 points. Even Jae'Lyn Withers finished with a double-double as he recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds. If the Tar Heels have their entire offense working again against Michigan State, they will be hard to stop.

Michigan State won their first round matchup by 18 points over Mississippi State, but a big reason for the large margin of victory was how poorly the Bulldogs played.

Mississippi State had 14 turnovers and shot just 22.2% from deep. The Bulldogs also failed to crash the paint and were outrebounded, so it made sense that the Spartans were able to pull away. Do not expect the same sloppy play from UNC, so for that reason, the Tar Heels are the pick in this game.

H3 - Over 141.5

These teams both have the same strength - offense. North Carolina scored 90 points in the first round against Wagner and have scored at least 75 points in seven of their last eight games.

Bacot is a force in the paint and is one of the most efficient forwards in the country. Plus, the Tar Heels have Ryan on the perimeter who is an excellent shooter. Combine those two with three other athletic wings, and UNC has one of the best starting lineups in college basketball. Also, it seems hard to imagine that Michigan State has the size or athleticism to guard Bacot in the paint.

Although Michigan State do not average as many points as UNC in the last few weeks, the Spartans still have an efficient offense with several excellent shooters. Michigan State do not rely on perimeter shots to keep them in the game but will take the open looks from deep when the other team allows it.

In their opening round matchup, the Spartans were 10-for-23 from behind the line. That was a big reason for their win, so if North Carolina fails to put pressure on the perimeter, this could be a very high scoring game.
