McNeese St. vs. Gonzaga: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Gonzaga Bulldogs (25-7) look to continue their recent run of success in the tournament when they face McNeese St. (30-3) in a Midwest Region first-round matchup at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City Thursday night at 7:25 PM ET.

Gonzaga is making its 25th straight tournament appearance, the third longest streak in the nation behind Kansas (tournament-record 34 straight) and Michigan St. The Bulldogs have advanced to at least the regional semifinal in each of the last eight men's tournaments.

At the opposite end of the spectrum lies McNeese St, the Southland Conference champions and one of just four teams in the nation with 30 wins.

The Cowboys hail from Lake Charles in Louisiana, two hours plus east of Houston. McNeese St. is making its third appearance in the madness and first since the 2001/02 season, and has yet to win a tournament game.

Gonzaga comes in having won 14-of-16, with its only two losses coming against West Coast Conference rival and fellow No. 5-seed Saint Mary’s. The Cowboys have won 11 straight and lead the nation in scoring margin at 18.9 points. The winner advances to face the No. 4 Kansas-No. 13 Samford winner Saturday.

McNeese St. vs. Gonzaga Betting Picks and Predictions

Gonzaga -6

This will be a popular upset pick because of the 5-12 matchup and the fact that Gonzaga is considered down compared to recent seasons. They’re also 25-7 with wins at Kentucky and Saint Mary’s, and they possess a strong recent pedigree of advancing to the second weekend.

However, Gonzaga is just 13-14 against the spread as the favorite this season, while McNeese St. is 4-1 ATS as the underdog. We don’t expect the Cowboys to be awed or intimidated by the Bulldogs, but we do expect Gonzaga’s seventh-ranked scoring offense (84.9 ppg) to overcome the Cowboys’ fifth-ranked scoring defense (61.5 ppg allowed) in the end.

Look for the Bulldogs to cover this six-point spread and advance to the second round by taking care of what should be a plucky McNeese St.

Under 150

If Gonzaga gets going, and McNeese St. tries to hang with them, the over could be threatened, but the Cowboys’ defense should slow the Bulldogs up just enough to keep the scoring in the 70s, giving them a better chance to pull off the upset.

The total should come close, but stay under the 150 currently listed with McNeese St anticipated to try and make something of a scrap of this contest on their tournament return.
