Kansas vs. Houston: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The Houston Cougars (27-3, 14-3) are the No. 1 ranked team in the country and are on the verge of clinching their second straight No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, and coach Kelvin Sampson’s team has won eight straight.

Since losing back-to-back games at Iowa State and TCU to open their first season in the Big 12 at 1-2 in conference play, the Cougars have reeled off 13 wins in 14 games.

Houston’s only loss in that stretch was a 78-65 setback at Kansas (22-8, 10-7), their opponents in the regular season finale at Fertitta Center in Houston on Saturday.

The 14th-ranked Jayhawks are tied for fourth in the BIg 12 and in danger of failing to get one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA tournament for the first time in coach Bill Self’s 21 years at the helm. Kansas started the season 15-2, but has gone just 7-6 since.

Houston has a one-game lead over Iowa State and can clinch the Big 12 regular season title with a win over Kansas, which is looking to build momentum going into the postseason.

Read below to see our experts’ picks and predictions for this Big 12 matchup.

Kansas vs. Houston betting picks and predictions

Kansas +8 (-110)

The Cougars have dominated at the defensive end this season, leading the nation in points allowed at just 57.3 per game. However, they did surrender 79 in that loss to Kansas last month, the second most Houston has allowed all season.

Houston needs little motivation outside of clinching the Big 12 regular season with a win, but erasing that defensive performance at Allen Fieldhouse could be the extra push the team needs to cover.

However, an eight-point spread against Kansas is a tough cover, no matter how they have played recently. The Cougars are 16-0 at home and have won their eight home conference games by an average of 18 points. But, Houston is 14-15-1 against the spread this season, including 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games, although they are 10-5-1 against the spread at home.

Conversely, Kansas is just 4-6 on the road this season, including 2-6 in conference play. The Jayhawks are 3-7 against the spread away and 1-3 against the spread as an underdog this season. We think Kansas has something to show in their regular season finale and will cover this eight-point spread today.

Total Points Over 137.5 (-110)

Kansas averages 77 points a game, followed by Houston at 74.1 ppg. In theory, this should be a high-scoring game.

The Cougars have revenge and a regular season conference title on their minds. That means they will look to put the clamps down on Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson inside and Kevin McCullar Jr outside while pushing the tempo offensively.

Kansas, meanwhile, will look to replicate their offensive performance against the Cougars from February, when they scored 79 points.

Both teams have a sub-.500 record playing to the over this season. Kansas is 14-15-1 and Houston is 13-17. The current total for this contest is 137.5 points, and we believe Kansas and Houston will play to the over.
