Creighton vs. St. John’s: Free Picks, Predictions and Odds

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the Big East Tournament final when the St. John’s Red Storm and Creighton Bluejays collide at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday evening.

An automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament is at stake, although that is obviously the least of concerns for either one of these programs. St. John’s (29-4, 18-2 Big East) is the sixth-ranked team in the nation, while Creighton should be comfortably in the field with a 24-9 record (15-5 in conference).

Creighton vs St. John’s betting picks and predictions 

St. John’s -6.5 (-110) 

St. John’s has been the cream of the crop in the Big East throughout this 2024-25 campaign and it should put an exclamation point on that distinction this weekend. Head coach

Rick Pitino’s club has won eight games in a row and 18 of its last 19. Their only loss during this stretch came on the road at Villanova via a 73-71 decision on 12th February.

Unsurprisingly, the Red Storm have been dominant so far in the conference tournament. They opened with a 78-57 rout of Butler and then clobbered Marquette 79-63 in the semis.

Kadary Richmond has been doing it all for the Johnnies. He led the team in rebounding in each of the first two tournament games and he has been its assists leader in five consecutive contests.

Richmond (12.8 ppg) has also scored in double-figures in 15 of the last 16 outings. RJ Luis Jr. (18.0 ppg) has reached the 20-point mark in four of the past five contests.

Creighton has defeated St. John’s once before this season, but that was in the friendly confines of Omaha on December 31. That game was also decided by just a single point.

The Red Storm turned the tide with a six-point victory on 16th February, when they trailed 14-4 in the early stages but pretty much dominated the rest of the way.

St. John’s won’t be taking this formidable opponent lightly, but at the same time it will take confidence not only from its own current level of play but also from the last 35 minutes of that head-to-head matchup less than a month ago.

It should be a typically pro-St. John’s crowd at Madison Square Garden and that will only help push the Red Storm to a win and cover on Saturday.

Although 152 points were scored in the most recent meeting between these two teams, it cannot be forgotten that the first matchup finished with a mere 113 points.

That is hardly a surprise given that both teams are stout on the defensive end of the floor.

St. John’s is holding opponents to 65.9 ppg, while Creighton is giving up 69.2 ppg. St. John’s defense has suffocated all kinds of opponents this season and it will likely do the same against Creighton.

Per KenPom, the Red Storm rank No. 1 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency and they are No. 10 in opponents’ two-point shooting percentage. SJU is also No. 12 in turnover percentage defense, while Creighton’s offense is 256th in turnover percentage.

As it is for many teams when they have to go up against St. John’s, this is not a good matchup for Creighton. The Bluejays can be expected to turn the ball over a whole bunch of times, which will naturally lead to fewer points on the scoreboard.

Saturday’s showdown could be played at somewhat of a slow pace, too. This is the third game in three days for both teams and Creighton even needed double-overtime to get past DePaul in the quarterfinals.

Through two tournament games, the ‘Jays are averaging 65.5 points in regulation while allowing 62.0 points.
