Alabama vs. Charleston: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

The No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide, coming off an upset loss in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, face CAA champions the No. 13 Charleston Cougars on Friday night.

With the game tipping off at 7:35 pm ET tonight on truTV, it’s time to break down the betting odds and make our best bets.

Alabama vs. Charleston betting picks and predictions

Alabama -9.0 (-110)

This could be the most entertaining matchup of the entire first round, but that does not necessarily mean that it will be competitive. The question is: whether Charleston can keep up with Alabama’s high-powered offense?

Bama is the highest-scoring team in the entire country and Charleston’s defense is allowing 106.1 points per 100 possessions (No. 176 nationally).

The Crimson Tide are also among the biggest teams around, so their size could give the Cougars a lot of trouble down low. Alabama is likely to get a lot of good looks, and this is a team that has no trouble knocking down high-percentage shots.

Four players on head coach Nate Oats’ roster are averaging at least 11.0 points per game, led by Mark Sears (21.1 PPG) and the Tide’s firepower is likely too much for the Cougars.

Over 172.5 Total Points (-110)

It is true that 172.5 is a big number – but it probably isn’t big enough for this matchup. These offenses are simply too good and the pace will likely be too fast.

Alabama ranks third in the country in shortest average possession length (a mere 14.5 seconds), while Charleston is in the top 60 (per KenPom) in adjusted offensive efficiency.

The Crimson Tide have scored at least 100 points a whopping nine times during the 2023/24 campaign and they average 126.5 points per 100 possessions.

This has all the makings of a track meet, with both teams playing their part to cash the over.

Aaron Estrada Over 1.5 three-pointers made (+100)

At even money, there is decent value on Alabama guard Aaron Estrada making at least two three-pointers on Friday.

Estrada has drained a pair of triples in three of the last five games, including a 2-for-5 effort from deep during his team’s SEC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Florida.

The Woodbury, N.J. native is a fifth-year senior at his fourth different school playing in the tournament for the first time in his career. Nobody in this matchup has more experience, so this is Estrada’s time to step up.

Meanwhile, Charleston is No. 176 in the nation in three-point percentage defense (33.6). It has surrendered 256 three-balls on 761 attempts so far this season.
