A huge night in the NBA is headlined by a showdown between the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.
OKC finds itself in first place in the Western Conference at 10-2, while Phoenix is just one game back with a 9-3 record. It should also be noted that all 12 contests on Friday are part of the NBA Cup, which was known as the In-Season Tournament last year.
This is a battle between the walking wounded. Phoenix is without Kevin Durant (calf) and Bradley Beal (calf), while Jusuf Nurkic (ankle) is questionable. Oklahoma City is missing Chet Holmgren (hip), Isaiah Hartenstein (hand), Alex Caruso (hip) and Jaylin Williams (hamstring). In a matchup between two teams that can't be trusted given all of the moving parts, the smart play is on the underdog to cover a sizable spread.
Although Durant and Beal have already missed three games apiece this season, the Suns have nonetheless been playing well. They fell at the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, but they have not yet lost back-to-back games.
Phoenix still has one healthy all-star at its disposal in Devin Booker, who is getting notable support from Tyus Jones and Josh Okogie. Jones scored 22 points against the Kings and Okogie is now averaging in double-figures for the season after pouring in 25.
If the visitors' role players continue stepping up, they can keep this one close.
There are too many key players sidelined for the over to be an appealing play.
Durant is averaging 27.6 ppg and Beal is contributing 17.8 ppg, so the Suns are without a lot of scoring. For Oklahoma City, Holmgren was delivering 16.4 ppg through 10 games before he went down.
While the Suns should be commended for showing resilience without Durant and Beal, they have struggled to be consistent on offense.
They averaged 111.7 points in the first three games Durant missed, which is not terrible but also nothing special. Phoenix scored just 104 when both Durant and Beal were absent on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City boasts by far the best scoring defense in the Western Conference at 103.8 points per game allowed.
In the entire association, only the Orlando Magic give up fewer points – and by only a tenth of a point (103.7).
All things considered, the under looks like the right play even with a modest number of 226. It also correlates nicely with Suns +7.5, because they probably wouldn’t be able to keep up with the Thunder in a shootout when Durant and Beal are on the sidelines.
In three games without Durant playing alongside him, Booker has exceeded this number only once – and that wasn't with a ton of room to spare at a 31-point output. His other two scoring totals were 23 and 18.
In three games without Beal he has scored 21 points or fewer on two occasions. Wednesday marked the first time that both Durant and Beal were out at the same time; Booker attempted 16 shots from the floor (lower than his season average) and finished with only 18 points.
It's also worth noting that the former Kentucky standout is shooting just 34.0 percent from three-point range so far in this 2024-25 campaign, which would tie the lowest season-long number of his career.
