After pulling off two big trades to bring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges to Madison Square Garden in the summer, the New York Knicks will be disappointed that they look set to finish third in the NBA’s Eastern Conference this term.
They finished second last season but Sunday’s 118-105 loss to the Celtics has left them a fair way off Boston and even further behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, who routed the Knicks 142-105 on Friday.
However, for all their inconsistency, they are still in a far better place than their next opponents, the Philadelphia 76ers.
Philly have endured a miserable campaign, losing 37 of their 57 games and looking likely to miss out on even a play-in place.
Things may only get worse for the 76ers on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, where a fired-up crowd will expect a positive reaction from their team following back-to-back defeats.
The Knicks have been made overwhelming favorites for this clash and it is easy to see why.
They are third in the East, nine places and 17 wins better off than the struggling 76ers, and boast an impressive 20-10 record at Madison Square Garden this season.
New York’s defeats against the top-of-the-East Cavaliers and the reigning champion Celtics can be excused at this point in the season, and they have tended to fare much better against the teams lower in the standings.
A worrying stat for fans of the Knicks is the fact their side are 11-14 against teams with a record of over .500. However, more important to predicting this game is their 22-6 record against teams below .500, a field the 20-37 Sixers certainly find themselves in.
Things are not getting any better for Philly either, with nine losses in their last 10 games, including each of the last eight.
They were utterly embarrassed by another underperforming side, the Chicago Bulls, in their last outing, losing 142-110, and a record of 7-24 against teams above .500 will do nothing to inspire confidence ahead of a trip to MSG.
Tom Thibodeau will expect a reaction from his group following their back-to-back defeats - even if they came against two of the NBA’s three best teams - and he should get one against Philly, who have lost seven of their last 10 meetings with the Knicks.
A -10.0 line may seem a touch high for New York, given they have failed to cover that in five straight home games and in eight of their last 10 in total, but their need for a reaction should see them put the 76ers to the sword.
Only six teams have a worse defensive rating than Philadelphia’s 115.6 and they may struggle to cope with an offense led by high-volume scorers Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, who are supported by excellent spot-up shooters Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.
With the Philly defense set to take a battering, it could pay to back a high-scoring game playing out at Madison Square Garden.
The line has been set at 230.5, which may seem steep at first glance given the average over the last two games between these teams has been just 227 points, but there is reason to believe this pair can hit that tally this time around.
The Knicks are expected to do most of the scoring and an average points tally of 122 across their last three home games shows just how dangerous their offense can be.
The threat of Brunson and Towns means they are often focused on by an opposing team’s best defenders, opening up plenty of space for Anunoby, Bridges and Miles McBride to knock down corner threes.
The Knicks will expect to maintain their recent points average at Madison Square Garden and should the 76ers keep up their away average of 111.7 per contest over their last three road outings, Over 230.5 can land.
While, as a whole, the Knicks struggled against the Cavaliers and then the Celtics, Towns did not. The New York center put up 23 in Cleveland and then 24 in Boston, suggesting he can shatter a 24.5 points line with ease against the 76ers.
Towns was still finding his feet in New York when putting up 21 points when these teams met in December and he should do much better this time around, especially as 76ers superstar Joel Embiid, as is so often the case, is out due to injury.
