Less than a year ago, these two sides played out a tense 4-3 matchup in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Cavs prevailed in Game 7, with the two sides each winning their respective home games to push the series all the way.

Months on from that series, the two sides have gone in very different directions. The Cavs are the top side in the East, having won 16 consecutive games. On the other hand, the Magic have slumped to eighth and are facing the Play-In tournament thanks to a series of injuries this term.

Given the gap that has emerged, the Cavs are huge favorites to claim a 17th win on the bounce. Can the Magic keep it competitive?

The Cavs saw off the Grizzlies last time out with a 133-124 victory and the gulf between these two could be even larger. The Cavs picked up a 122-82 victory when these two sides met a few weeks ago, while they won by 11 points in an early November clash between the pair.

The Magic are close to full health, but their injury issues early in the season appear to have disrupted their chemistry. The continued absence of starting point guard Jalen Suggs is another big issue for Orlando, as he’s a brilliant on-ball defender and an unselfish playmaker who does a lot of creative work for a Magic team who lack ballhandlers. 

The Cavs lead the league in terms of points per game and offensive rating, while they’ve got the fifth-best defensive rating in the NBA. 

The Cavs have the best record in the league overall and they’re also the most effective NBA team when it comes to covering the spread. Opponents Orlando have covered as an underdog in only 10 of 29 games this season, so take the Cavs to claim another big victory.

Cleveland Cavaliers to win and Orlando Magic to score under 100 points (+240)

The absence of Suggs and Cleveland’s stellar defensive record makes this price look tempting. Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt will make it incredibly difficult for the Magic to get to the rim. Max Strus and De’Andre Hunter are strong wing defenders too, so the Magic will likely have a tough time getting points on the board.

The Magic rank 30th in the NBA for three-pointers attempted and they’ve also got the worst three-point percentage. Orlando are last in the league for field-goal attempts overall and second-last for field goals made. Their average of 104.5 points per game is the lowest in the NBA too.

The Cavs have enough defensive options to push the Magic’s points tally down, so back them to hold the visitors under 100 points in a victory. 

Darius Garland over 26.5 combined points and assists (-120)

This game looks like a good opportunity for Darius Garland to take the lead and the All-Star heads into this game having scored 20 points or more in three of his last four starts. He’s also a brilliant creator, averaging 6.7 assists per game. 

Garland has posted at least seven assists in six of his last eight games, so take him to top 26.5 combined points and assists in what should be a routine Cavs victory.
