As we approach the final month of the NBA’s regular season, it’s hard to see any way that the Oklahoma City Thunder slip from top spot in the Western Conference.

The young Thunder won a three-way fight with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves to top the standings last year, but this time around, they’re 9.5 games clear of the chasing pack with 23 left to play.

The Thunder are on course to record the best point differential in the history of the NBA, something they can boost against a Spurs side who are set to struggle down the stretch.

Over 125.5 OKC Thunder points (-115)

The Spurs were poised for a late push for the Play-In following their trade for De’Aaron Fox last month. However, Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the season following the All-Star break. With coach Gregg Popovich also ruled out, the Spurs are likely to push for as high of a draft pick as they can manage for the remainder of the season.

Before being ruled out, Wembanyama was a clear favourite in the Defensive Player of the Year race. That was despite his side being 18th in defensive rating. The Frenchman appears to have been plugging plenty of gaps, as the Spurs have suffered some comprehensive losses of late, going 1-4 across their last five.

The Spurs did beat the Memphis Grizzlies last time out, but even in that victory they gave up 128 points. They shipped 125 to the Detroit Pistons in their last home game, so a clash with the best team in the West isn’t likely to end well.

The Thunder are scoring 119.1 points per 100 possessions this season and they’re fourth in the league in points scored per game. The Thunder have scored 135, 129 and 128 points across their previous three, so back them to impress. 

Isaiah Hartenstein over 23.5 points & rebounds (-110)

Wembanyama’s absence should make Hartenstein’s night easier and the Thunder big man will be playing a bigger role given Chet Holmgren is ruled out.

Hartenstein is far from the flashiest free agent signing but he’s been crucial. The Thunder’s offensive rebounding numbers are up over 25% year-on-year and he leads the team in that regard, almost doubling the average of the next-closest player.

He’s averaging 11.4 rebounds per game and 11.0 points per night. Given that the Spurs will lack options to put on him, back Hartenstein to clear his combined points and rebounds line. 

Devin Vassell under 10.5 points (+320)

The response to Vassell’s $135 million extension in 2023 wasn’t exactly positive, but the Spurs have faith he can develop into a good scoring option alongside Victor Wembanyama. It’s a risk they could afford to take, given that his salary will account for just 13% of the cap by the time Wembanyama’s extension kicks in. 

The Spurs seem to have higher hopes for Vassell than him being a tradeable contract, but the scoring consistency isn’t really there. He has posted two 20-point games in his last three starts, but he’s also failed to hit double figures in five of his previous eight.

The Thunder lead the league in defensive rating, and they have plenty of wings to switch to a guard like Vassell. In his last five games, he’s scored six points against Detroit, five against New Orleans, and nine against Houston. This solid Thunder team can hold him under 10.
