Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals takes place on Thursday night, with the Oklahoma City Thunder 3-2 up against the Denver Nuggets.
OKC have won the last two games and head to Colorado looking to seal the series. They will look to their main man, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, to deliver again.
Gilgeous-Alexander was the league’s top scorer during the regular season and could be the key to the Thunder extending their run in the playoffs.
The Thunder were 2-1 down before Sunday’s Game 4, but back-to-back wins have put Mark Daigneault’s men in a strong position before flying to Denver.
OKC topped the Western Conference during the regular season and a big reason for that was their 32-8 record on the road.
An 92-87 success at the Ball Arena was followed by a 112-105 victory on their home court on Wednesday, with Gilgeous-Alexander again the shining light.
The Canadian fired 25 points, six rebounds and six assists on Sunday, before hitting 31 points, six rebounds and seven assists last time out to give OKC the series advantage. The three-time NBA All-Star looks to have rediscovered his form at just the right time, having scored just 18 in Game 3.
Denver’s struggles with efficiency have continued, with the Nuggets failing to score 115 or more points in each of the last four games of the series.
Something which has gone under the radar is just how good OKC has been on defense, even though they finished the regular season ranked as the number one defensive team in the league.
The Thunder have now limited their opponents to five or less field goals in the 4th quarter on nine separate occasions this season, more than any other team. With SGA shooting efficiently in the last couple games and the team dialing up its defense, back OKC on the spread as road favorites.
SGA looks to be in a battle with Nikola Jokic for the league’s MVP award and both had arguably their best games of the series on Wednesday.
Gilgeous-Alexander was outscored by Jokic (31-44), but the OKC star helped his team to a crucial win and they will need him to deliver again in Game 6.
Now that the series is on the line, expect another these two stars to continue raising their games, and the Thunder will feel their superstar can reach 30 points again.
The Oklahoma City point guard has scored more than 30 points in four playoff contests this season, averaging 28.0 per game in nine postseason matchups.
As we mentioned earlier, the points haven’t been flowing for the Nuggets in this series, and they only managed 105 on Wednesday, despite Jokic dropping 44 himself.
With the series in the balance, the Denver crowd will expect the hosts to leave everything out there and that means they are likely to score more than they have in the series to date.
Even though they finished 18 games behind OKC in the final standings, David Adelman’s squad averaged 120.8 points per game during the regular season.
If Jamal Murray can chip in with another 25+ game at the Ball Arena, then Jokic should be able to help them nudge over the 110-point mark.
