An eight-game slate in the NBA on Wednesday night is headlined by the New York Knicks visiting the Phoenix Suns.
Both teams are off to decent starts to their respective 2024/25 campaigns, as New York comes in at 8-6 while Phoenix is 9-6.
Although the Suns are still sporting a decent record, things have gone downhill for them following a decent start.
It’s not hard to figure out why that is the case.
Phoenix is without Kevin Durant (calf) and Bradley Beal (calf), while Jusuf Nurkic (ankle) is questionable for Wednesday.
The Suns have lost four games in a row, with three of those setbacks coming by a double-digit margin. They fell at home to the Orlando Magic via a 109-99 score on Monday even though Orlando is still without star forward Paolo Banchero.
The Knicks are more than capable of capitalizing on an undermanned opponent and have won three straight games thanks in part to a stellar defense and an in-form Jalen Brunson.
The star point guard has delivered back-to-back double-doubles and went 5-for-9 from three-point range during Monday’s 134-106 thrashing of the Washington Wizards.
Look for New York to stay hot by winning and covering.
It’s hard to justify backing the Over with Phoenix when Durant and Beal are sidelined.
Durant is averaging 27.6 ppg and Beal is contributing 17.8 ppg, so it would be an understatement to say that the Suns are without a lot of scoring.
They have finished with team totals of 104, 83 and 99 in three of the last four contests.
Phoenix is scoring the sixth-fewest points in the Western Conference (111.4 per game) and New York is allowing the fourth-fewest points in the Eastern Conference (111.1), so this is a good recipe for a relatively low-scoring affair.
The Knicks have surrendered just 104 and 106 points in their last two contests and they have kept opponents below the 100 mark three times already this month.
It’s also worth noting that both teams are generally content to slow down the game. New York is dead last in the NBA in pace of play at 99.0 possessions per game, while Phoenix is 25th (101.1).
In their last three outings, the Suns have averaged a mere 96.5 possessions. All things considered, the Under looks like the right play even with a modest number of 223.5.
Towns will go off for a 40-point performance every now and then, but that is unlikely to happen in what should be a slow-paced game in Phoenix.
His norm is in the low-20s or mid-20s, which can be expected on Wednesday. Towns has been kept below this number in two of the last four outings and he has taken 16 shots or fewer from the floor in three of the last four.
The Kentucky product has attempted five or fewer free-throws in seven of 14 games this season, so he is not getting a ton of free opportunities. And, Towns rarely has a huge volume of shots given his team’s depth.
There are only so many shots to go around for guys like Brunson, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby. All three of those guys are averaging at least 13.0 FG attempts per game.
