The New York Knicks sit third in the Eastern Conference heading into Thursday’s clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Knicks have won two of their last three games and head to Minnesota fresh after a three-day break, which could give them the edge.
Having reached the Conference semifinals last season, the Knicks look like playoff contenders again this year after a solid start to the campaign.
Tom Thibodeau’s men are 16-10 and only the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics sit above them in the Eastern standings.
The Knicks are 8-6 on the road and they go into Thursday night’s game having won seven of their last 10 match-ups.
New York have played a game more than their opponents, with the Timberwolves currently seventh in the West with a 14-11 record.
The visitors have been racking up the points and dominating the paint in a number of their recent games, scoring 120 or more in 10 of their 26 matchups. That includes the highest team score of the season to date, with a 118-145 win over the Denver Nuggets.
New York have played a game more than their opponents, with the Timberwolves currently seventh in the Western Conference, with a 14-11 record.
Minnesota go into this clash looking for a third win on the spin, after a 97-87 success over the Lakers on Saturday and then going on to beat San Antonio 92-106.
Those two games came within a 48-hour period and may have taken a lot out of their roster, which has struggled for points this season.
Chris Finch’s squad has averaged 109.8 per game, which sees them sat 22nd in the league in the 2024-25 points-scoring standings.
In contrast, the Knicks are eighth and are averaging 116.4 points, scoring 100 or more in each of their last seven games.
Both teams won their home game in the two meetings last season, with the Knicks winning 112-106 at the Garden, while the Timberwolves came out on top 117-100 at the Target Center.
The Timberwolves lost Karl-Anthony Towns in the offseason, with the four-time All Star bringing to an end his nine-year stint in Minnesota.
The 29-year-old was traded to New York and join a Knicks roster that appears to be heading in the right direction.
The franchise has not won a Championship since 1973, but they have made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons under Thibodeau.
Adding Towns to their ranks could prove significant, with the Center leading the league in rebounds – with an average of 13.9 per game.
The 2015 first-round draft pick is also among this season’s top-15 points scorers in the NBA, averaging 24.8 points per game.
This will be the first time Towns will have faced the Timberwolves since his trade and he will be desperate to put one over his former employers.
Towns goes into the clash in top form, having claimed 22 rebounds and 22 points in Sunday’s win in Florida over the Orlando Magic.
He has been ably assisted by Jalen Brunson, who is one place above his team-mate in the league’s points-scoring stats.
Brunson has averaged 25.0 points per game and goes into Thursday’s encounter having scored 31 in the win over Orlando. Brunson scored 25 points in this fixture last season and claimed 14 assists in the win at the Garden.
