Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Phoenix Suns: Picks, Predictions, Odds and Player Props

Friday brings us a massive slate in the Western Conference, which includes a showdown between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns.

Minnesota currently holds the number one seed in the West but the Timberwolves need to keep winning to fend off the likes of Denver and Oklahoma City for that top spot.

On the other hand, Phoenix needs to stay out of the Play-In Tournament, and a win over the Timberwolves would go a long way to securing a playoff spot.

Will Minnesota knock off Phoenix on the road, or will the Suns pick up a much-needed victory?

Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Phoenix Suns betting picks and predictions

Minnesota Timberwolves +4.5 (-110)

The Suns are looking good heading into the postseason thanks in large part to a rare sight on the basketball court: a healthy “big three” of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. However, the Timberwolves are still being a little bit undervalued in this game.

Despite an injury keeping Karl-Anthony Towns sidelined, Minnesota has still proven its legitimacy as a title contender over the past month. The Timberwolves have won eight of their last 10 contests, including convincing victories over the Nuggets, Cavaliers and Clippers.

Anthony Edwards and company have been strong against playoff teams all season long and that should continue against a Suns team that doesn’t have much in the way of interior scoring to challenge Rudy Gobert at the rim.

In a game that should be close from start to finish, it’s hard not to take the points with the underdog, especially since the line is over one possession.

Under 216.5 (-110)

More often than not, a win for this iteration of the Timberwolves pairs nicely with the game going under the listed total. That’s exactly the correlated wager to make in this matchup, especially given how well Minnesota’s defense has played all season long.

The Timberwolves have had a clear identity all season, and it's anchored by their stout defense.

With Gobert patrolling the paint and the likes of Edwards and Jaden McDaniels on the perimeter, the Timberwolves are leading the NBA with a defensive rating of 107.8 points allowed per 100 possessions. That is nearly three points higher than the team in second place, proving that Minnesota can stifle opposing offenses on playoff teams as well.

Even with the level of scoring talent on the floor, this should be a low-scoring, defensive struggle in Phoenix.

Grayson Allen over 2.5 threes made (-115)

This number is only sitting at 2.5 because Grayson Allen missed the last Suns game due to hip soreness. However, assuming that Allen is going to suit up for Friday’s contest, he is sure to get plenty of shots up from beyond the arc.

The former Duke guard is having his best season as a professional, shooting 47% from the three-point line on nearly six attempts per game. This is in large part because the defense has to focus so much on Durant, Booker and Beal, so Allen is left to patrol the perimeter and capitalize on open looks.

It would be expected that Minnesota’s defense would be keyed in on the Suns trio of elite midrange scorers, so Allen should be the beneficiary of some kickouts to the perimeter for open shots.

Allen has drained 49 three-pointers over his last nine contests, so just asking him to pick up a trio of threes in this one seems like a reasonable proposition, even against this Minnesota defense.
