The 2024/25 NBA postseason keeps rolling along and the Western Conference Finals between the Timberwolves and Thunder is coming off its best game of the series thus far, as OKC held off a spirited effort from Minnesota to seize control of the series with a 128-126 victory.
While the Thunder are now a win away from the NBA Finals with a 3-1 series lead, we can still expect Game 5 to be another compelling contest, considering what’s on the line for both teams.
Will the Thunder close it out at home, or will the Timberwolves spring the upset and stave off elimination for another game? Let’s get into our expert’s betting picks and predictions for Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
While Oklahoma City has won both of its games at home in convincing fashion, this game should still be a tough test for the Thunder.
Closing out a series is not easy at all, and we have seen plenty of top teams struggle to put away their opponent at home in a close-out game with so much on the line. The Thunder are a great team, but even the great teams have experienced issues in these spots over the years.
It’s also apparent that Minnesota was nowhere near its best self in Games 1 and 2, particularly on offense. With the Minnesota role players gaining confidence after the last two games, we can expect a loose and free game from the Timberwolves, who now have nothing to lose on the road.
Anthony Edwards is coming off a rare game where he struggled to score, as he finished Game 4 with just 16 points, while three of his teammates stepped up with 20-point performances. The Timberwolves star has not been held to under 20 points in consecutive games this postseason, so we should see a bounce-back performance from the dynamic guard.
If Edwards gets back up to his usual speed and the Timberwolves' role players continue to shoot the ball well from beyond the arc, Minnesota will certainly be a live underdog in this game. At the very least, the Timberwolves should be in position to cover +8.5 in Game 5.
These teams just combined for 254 total points in regulation in Game 4 of this series, and we could see a similar result on Wednesday. With play returning to Oklahoma City, the market has hardly adjusted to the scoring outburst we just saw, with the total for this game being set at 220.5.
Oklahoma City has had no issues scoring throughout this series, as the Thunder have tallied 114 or more points in three of the four games to this point. During this postseason, the Thunder have played at the fastest tempo of all teams in the field, which should mean plenty of possessions for the hosts in this contest.
Much like we saw in Game 4, these teams should be set up for another back-and-forth encounter in this pivotal game.
To the surprise of no one, Oklahoma City has also been leading these playoffs in points off turnovers, racking up 25 points off Minnesota giveaways in the last game. If the Thunder can continue to force the Timberwolves into making mistakes, they will have opportunities to secure live-ball turnovers and get out and run in transition.
On the other side, the Timberwolves had trouble scoring on the road in the opening two games, but Minnesota has looked a lot more comfortable against the Oklahoma City defense, averaging 134.5 points per game since. We can expect the Timberwolves to carry this confidence on offense into Game 5 on the road, especially since there is certainly room for improvement from its top scorers in Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle.
Both teams should continue their good form offensively, which points our expert in the direction of Over 220.5 in this one.
