The Cleveland Cavaliers simply cannot stop winning, with Kenny Atkinson’s team becoming the first in the NBA to reach the 50-win mark last week and, in the process, also becoming the first franchise assured of a playoff spot.
Of course, the Cavs’ aspirations are clearly far greater than simply making the playoffs and they will have a first championship since 2016 on their mind.
They are showing no signs of slowing down and it is hard to envisage an inconsistent Miami Heat team putting a stop to Cleveland’s momentum at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
Atkinson’s seemingly unstoppable Cavs extended their winning streak to 11 games with a 22-point victory over the Chicago Bulls last time out, and they should have no issues dominating the Heat in a similar fashion.
Even when the Cavs look down and out, they prove their strength.
Prior to their win over Chicago, Cleveland found themselves 22 points down to the reigning champion Boston Celtics in the first quarter, only to battle back and win 123-116.
Their winning streak also includes routs of the New York Knicks and Orlando Magic, teams with arguably far more talent than the Heat, who have won just four of their last 10 contests.
The Cavs won their last meeting with Miami by 20 points and given they have covered a -11.0 line in six of their last 10 games, it would be no surprise to see Cleveland thrash Erik Spoelstra’s side once again and cover the -10.5 spread.
While the Cavaliers’ success has certainly been a team effort, Donovan Mitchell is the star and he can shine once again on Wednesday.
Mitchell put up 34 points when these sides last met in January, making a line of just 23.5 look extremely low for this clash, especially as he is coming off of a 28-point haul against the Bulls.
The Cavs star has been on a tear for a while now, posting at least 26 points in five of his six appearances since the All-Star break, with the exception coming when playing just 23 minutes in the blowout against the Magic.
Andrew Wiggins would have been tasked with keeping tabs on Spida, but he is set to miss this clash for the Heat, meaning Mitchell should rack up the points again.
Evan Mobley has been ruled out for the Cavaliers, meaning Jarrett Allen will be given the bulk of responsibility when it comes to dominating the paint in Cleveland - a task he should be up to.
The Cavs center grabbed a huge 17 rebounds against the Bulls last time out and should have no issues notching double digits in that same stat for the 10th time in 13 games, with the Heat’s primary glass cleaner, Bam Adebayo, lacking the size of Allen.
Cleveland’s big man is no slouch on the offensive end either with his 25 points against Chicago marking his 11th game with over 10 points in his last 13 appearances.
Allen notched a double-double when these sides last met in January and could rack up at least 10 points and 10 rebounds for a third straight game.
